IDEAS: Ives, Rimsky-Korsakov, Partch, Carrillo, Harrison, Beardsley, Varese, Cage, Coates
Code:P-200212
Price: £14.50
Quantity in Basket: none
A very small, essentially handmade, edition of 300 copies of pieces researched and performed for the microtonal society at various venues in New York. Includes an alternative version of Ives's The Unanswered Question (prepared by Ives himself), a world premiere of Rimsky-Korsakov's Prelude for Strings, Julian Carrillo's unpublished I think of you, performed here on a 96-tone harp and voice, Harry Partch's Ulysses departs from the edge of the World for trumpet, string bass and 3 Boobams, Lou Harrison's excellent and interesting Simfony in Free Style (World Premiere) for strings, bassoon, flutes, horn, electronic hap and percussion, David Beardsley's Sonic Boom for guitar activated Korg Synthesiser tuned to 23-limit harmonic series, Edgard Varese's Graphs and Time (world premiere - worked up from a sketch of a graphic score made by EV for the legendary Teo Macero for jazz ensemble; I think this may have fared better in the hands of the jazz musicians it was envisioned for; in this version it doesn't add anything to Varese's reputation), John Cage's In the Name of the Holocaust for prepared piano and the seldom performed Gloria Coates' Lunar Loops for two guitars which are microtonally retuned in the course of the piece. Historic microtonal pieces are rare, so for those interested, this is a must have.

I'm someone not much enamoured of drones and this is, essentially, a 64 minute drone. But then it is a classic, bottomless, exquisite drone - the product of 106,476 clarinets "rumbling and growling" as composer Al Margolis has it, sped up slowed down and treated in uncountable ways - a pleasure to be in the room with.

  IKEDA, RYOJI: 1000 fragments
Code:R-N089
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Contained noise of various sorts, arranged in extreme and radically opposing segments; very clean, very orderly, listenable in a perverse way, with no narrative content, but an engaging aesthetic wholeness, this is a good introduction to Ikeda's minimal but strict aesthetic. In three sections, one mobile and balanced, one extended and hollow, the third ghost-like. Austere and not for everyone, this is, however, also a welcome reissue by Raster-Notion of his first release (1995), though the minimal packaging won't tell you that, or anything else, so there is historical value here too, if 12 years constitutes history.

  ILAIYARAAJA'S MUSICAL JOURNEY
Code:IDA021
Price: £12.34
Quantity in Basket: none
This will be for those who enjoyed the first CD. A (rare) live concert, exquisitely executed, this is a little less unusual than the first but contains a minor gem - an entire piece made from only three notes, beautifully arranged.

  ILAIYARAAJA: Wings
Code:IDA019
Price: £12.93
Quantity in Basket: none
At last!! The long awaited first compilation of pieces by legendary Tamil film composer Dr. Ilaiyaraaja. For years a private enthusiasm of friends of Angelica (Fred Frith, Heiner Goebbels, John Zorn &c.), this music has circulated until now only on dubbed cassettes, with new material occasionally surfacing in local Tamil general stores. Massimo Simonini finally went to visit and came back with permission to make 3 compilations (from some 4500 pieces - the work never stops). What makes Ilaiyaraaja so universal is his cheerful adoption of much of the world's music and its instruments while remaining focused on the needs of song and the language of popular film; what makes him so addictive is his extraordinary sense of arrangement and instrumentation. Everything is detail with a small surprise lurking around every corner. This is work of painstaking subtlety, wrapped in simple forms - and luminous undemonstrative musicianship - the kind of work that grows with every listening and depends on its inner qualities and not on shock, dissidence or effect. These are perfectly crafted songs with mysterious arrangements and a catalogue of rhythms that are never as simple as they seem. A gem.

  INACTUELLES: PERCUSSION(S): (3-CDs plus DVD/video and book)
Code:inactuellesPercussion
Price: £52.88
Quantity in Basket: none
A collaboration between Mode and the Parisian art book store Tschann, combining CDs and DVDs of musical performances with an informative textbook. Volume 1 - a Euro-centric and very partial survey of C20 and C21 percussion music, performed by Roland Auzet and featuring 13 complete works (7 world premieres) for percussion solo (Xenakis, Taïra), percussion and voice (Xenakis, Pape), percussion and ensemble (Xenakis, Milhaud, Alsina) and percussion and electronics (Auzet, Bancquart, Campion, Jodlowski, Tanaka). Plus a DVD with Xenakis' Psappha and Rebonds and a 500+ page book in English and French written by musicologist Pierre-Albert CASTENE: Percussion(s): Gesture and Spirit, which discusses the history of percussion music and includes interviews with Auzet about the interpretation and performance of percussion music, especially the works and the composers recorded in this set. Preface by Pierre Boulez, postface by American percussionist Steven SCHICK. The book, though rather clunkily written (or translated) is the prize here, the 90 page essay on the history and use of percussion in 'serious' music in the C20 is extremely thorough, very well annotated and thoroughly documented.

INTERPRETING THE SOUNDSCAPE: Curated by PETER CUSACK
Code:EMFCD066
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Luckily you can now buy the CDs that accompany the wildly expensive MIT Leonardo journal separately. This CD came with Vol 16, it's a soundscape compilation by Peter Cusack's that sweeps across the field, taking in an empty concert hall in Chenobyl, a super-close-up recording of fire ants walking, data sonification, real-time street recordings (Delaurenti's impressive and brilliant republican convention documentation), the electromagnetic environment (Kubisch, Stankieviech), some sonic postcards, underwater recordings and other field work. An excellent and useful release, with some real gems - and a useful a snapshot-overview of the field as it stood in 2006.

INTONARUMORI ORCHESTRA: Atsuhhiro Ito, Otomo Yoshihide, Sachiko M, Toshimaru Nakamura, Tetuzi Akiyam
Code:OFF-SITE004
Price: £14.10
Quantity in Basket: none
Conceived and built in 1913 by the futurist painter Luigi Russolo as a logical extrapolation from his groundbreaking manifesto 'The art of noises', the intonarumori was a family of 12 mechanical instruments that could produce different kinds of controllable noise: the howler, the roarer, the crackler, the rubber, the hummer, the gurgler, the hisser, the whistler, the burster, the croaker and the rustler. There are no surviving plans, and no surviving instruments (all were destroyed in WW2). The current replica instruments - made in 1986 for a project in Tama Art University, Japan - comprise 6 of these, seemingly built without the glissando faculty of the originals, but still offering a very interesting array of unidentifiable acoustic rather than electronic, sounds. At least one can begin to imagine what these extraordinary instruments might have done. The 6 compositions here - one by each of the participants - explore some of these possibilities. Atsuhiru Ito and Otomo Yoshihide's, also the most complex and noisy, seem to me to be the most successful. Very skimpy notes accompany the CD, but it's an interesting and unusual project.

IOLINI, ROBERT: Iolini IOLINI, ROBERT: Iolini
Code:ReRRI
Price: £12.50
Quantity in Basket: none
Electroacoustic, Chamber Ensemble, Soundscapes and works for radio. Some will remember his two great small ensemble compositions from an earlier quarterly. This collection concentrates more on his (prize-winning) tape works and includes the great Hong Kong changeover cityscape 'In Between', extracts from works about Israeli whistleblower Mordecai Vanunu and Edwin Armstrong (inventor of FM modulation) as well as other radio works and three chamber pieces based on African rhythms. Enormous variety.

IOLINI, ROBERT: Songs from Hurt IOLINI, ROBERT: Songs from Hurt
Code:ReRRI1
Price: £12.50
Quantity in Basket: none
Robert transcends the divisions between music, documentary and radio art. The bulk of this CD is built around the extraordinary testimonies of aboriginal teenagers, prisoners and witnesses of a world in which the interviewees are continually told that they are surplus to requirements. All are set in musical frames - using both instrumental and environmental materials. The result is constantly gripping, scary and convincing. Truly remarkable and highly recommended. Sometimes a description can't do a record justice, you just have to hear it. Full texts and pictures.

  IRENEUSZ SOCHA: Sztetlach
Code:Dembitzer2005-08-17
Price: £13.51
Quantity in Basket: none
A hugely ambitious work, with an impressive ensemble of composers and instrumentalists performing a collection of pieces that feature mostly small, very differently instrumented ensembles, very varied - from percussive orchestra to solo clarinet. Rich, deep sounds, all wholly composed in the contemporary music direction, but with grittier undertones. Austere, but imaginative and accomplished.

  IRIONDO, MANCHION: Bias (8cm)
Code:Wallace66
Price: £8.81
Quantity in Basket: none
A curious and unusual recording - linked fragments with harmonic and melodic components for guitar, electronic sounds, keyboards and all manner of other materials that sound neither composed nor improvised and that veers from one idea to another in an apparently organised way. Subtle, but I think this is a fine piece of work.

IVES, CHARLES - HENRY BRANT: A Concord Symphony (The Henry Brant collection Vol.7)
Code:Innova414
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
What it says on the label. Brant (b.1913 and still kicking) whose unique poly-phonic, poly-metric, poly-stylistic and radically spatialised approach to composition was inspired by Ives decided in the late '50s to orchestrate Ives' luminous Concord Sonata (for piano). It took 36 years to complete and this is the result: an American Symphony on the grand scale - and impossible to relate to 1911 - when the Concord was commenced - although Brant has not updated anything, remaining true to Ives' score. A fascinating project. And interesting to compare with the piano version.

  IVES, CHARLES: Universe Symphony
Code:SS007
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
This realisation of Ives' unfinished, stunningly original, and prescient score was assembled and conducted by Johnny Reinhard (composer, performer, academic and founder of the Festival of Microtonal Music). It is a nothing less than a revelation. Beautifully recorded, this is a massive, timeless work that seems to hang free in musical space, slowly existing, like a ghostly nebula. Unprecedented both in its use of multiple tempi and epic dynamically-static structure, this is a work you really have to hear. Just the first 19 minutes of enormous, inevitable, impenetrable percussion, embodying an extremely slow, felt rather than heard, pulse with instruments moving in their own orbits, seemingly at their own, mysteriously changing tempi, is a step into another world and into another way of listening.

  JABLKON & SVECENY: Mumlava
Code:SUB0003-2
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
A light, sure touch. featuring variously, acoustic guitars, violin, viola, bass, oboe, bassoon, percussion and keyboards, where every detail is important and which features an effective and unusual use of low-mixed voices to add instrumental colour. Highly articulated and imaginative music, exquisitely realised.

  JABLKON: Baba Aga
Code:B+N9202
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
New CD from the eccentric acousticians. Not easy to clasify. Whoever heard the last will know what to expect. Newcomers I'd still advise to listen to JABLKON and SVECENY first. Two new releases.

  JABLKON: Devata Vlna
Code:SU5365-2311
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Finally reissued on CD, this was one of the signature Czech bands, unplaceable really. Not electric, but tough - though highly eccentric. A bit of acoustic early Etron Fou, but stranger... Involved, twisty compositions for guitars, tuned percussion and junk. Reissued here with 6 extra titles. Welcome back.

  JABLKON: Symphonic
Code:F10003-2031
Price: £14.69

As the title implies, Jablkon had the Czech Symphony Orchestra to play with - and violin maestro Jaroslav Sveceny. 11 pieces. A curiosity with some fine parts. Someone did a monstrous amount of work for this. A document

  JAPANESE INDEPENDENT MUSIC: Title (book)
Code:JIMBook
Price: £26.00
Quantity in Basket: none
An encyclopaedia, with a short historical overview, several more specialised articles, A-Z entries on groups and artists with full discographies, label contacts, publications, venues and website indexe and a couple of maps. 360 pages and pretty comprehensive (of course one can think of missing entries - mainly earlier groups whose vinyl records have not been reissued on CD) but that's nitpicking; essentially, this is the only resource of it's kind and invaluable. Congratulations to Frank Stoffer and his team of 20. Comes with a CD of 18 previously unreleased tracks (inc. Haino Keiji, Acid Mothers Temple, KK Null, Hoppy Kamiyama, Haco, Ex Girl, Ruins, Harpy &c.).
