| Compilation from the classic out of print 5 LP's. What to say about Lasse? That he's one of a kind? That he writes tunes you want to listen to over and over again? That his is a combination of the experimental and the architypical, the carnival folkmeet and every mortal's existential solitude? These are songs and instrumental pieces that will haunt and caress. For soul and body |

| Always a joy to receive a new CD from Lars, joined here on some tracks by guests including Michel Berckmans (bassoon), Coste Aptrea (mandolins), Morgen Agren (drums), Santiago Jiminez (violins) and Andreas Tengberg (cello). Exquisite tunes, beautifully arranged. Larsv quietly gets on with building while the world collapses around him. Chapeau. |

| Charming, minimal, collection of music-slices. Homler's 'Japanese' vocalising, Fajt's beautifully shaped drum riffs and Waegeman's tastefully layered Guitar/Violin/Keyboards make a unique soundprint, touching sometimes on a more clinical version of Iva Bittova or Aqsak Maboul. |

HOMOSEXUALS THE : Astral Glamour (3 CDs) Code:MSS204 Price:
£20.56

|
| One of the outstanding bands of the eighties who came and went with hardly anyone noticing and just 2 EP's and a single released on their own label. In 1982, ReR compiled an LP from the debris of the surviving tapes and that was that for 20 years. Now more or less everything that can be found has been collected together on these 3 CDs. The first two assemble the handful of releases issued by the band plus our own 1982 best-of LP, the 'Ici La Bas' album (the HS under other names), 'Venceremos' - a cassette release with some tracks by the group and various individual members, and various fragments - preliminary backing tracks and so on. The third CD features the work of the later group, mainly Bruno and Suzy. There is a 30pp booklet with some useful recovered photos, Bruno's version of the band history and notes on the tracks. Those of you for whom this is a must know who you are. You will need this release. Those who want to test the water first, I suggest you start with our single CD reissue of the ReR 1982 release. |

HOMOSEXUALS, THE : The Homosexuals CD Code:ReRHS1 Price:
£12.50
Quantity in Basket: none
|
| The Homosexuals appeared, stunned everyone who heard them and then disappeared. Between 1978 and 1982 they released 2 singles and a 12" EP. The three of them individually, under various names, also released a stack of other material, but as The Homosexuals they, curiously, left a whole archive of unreleased material lying around on tape with no idea of releasing it. When everyone had moved on, I was given all the masters and a invitation - if I was really still interested, to get on with it. For them it was already ancient history. I thought then, and think now, that this trio produced far and away the best this genre ever achieved; to the point that it transcends the genre even as it epitomises it. This music is just perfect: endlessly inventive, frighteningly memorable, brilliantly arranged - and is performed with throwaway genius as if tomorrow had been cancelled. What is it? Post Punk, sort of, except with too many chords, too much turned around rhythm - where a horror of droning on meets a mass of inspired detail and still results in a pellucid simplicity. Great texts, three unique singing voices, absurdity, criminal talent and a lot of blackness, in every sense. OK, so some of the recording quality was a bit lo-fi, but these were songs thrown off like sweat - and in the hurry some of the most radical mixing I ever heard from the period got fixed onto these recordings. Recommended released The Homosexuals LP in1984, gleaned from the surviving tapes, nearly all of which derived from one intense period of work. For this overdue CD reissue I went through all the surviving material again -there are 5 extra tracks, and they are not B sides - and then we re-mastered everything again to the highest possible current standard - without compromising the music. This is gold dust. |

HONSINGER, TRISTAN & MASSIMO SIMONINI: Call me Us Code:IDA025 Price:
£12.50
Quantity in Basket: none
|
| Cellist Honsinger and pre-existing media manipulist Simonini with a piece that falls between radio art, music theatre and... and what? A highly unusual performance in 10 parts that deploys its materials sparingly and intelligently and, through a combination of skill, spontaneity and ambiguity, arrives at something seemingly too controlled and precise to be improvised, but too complex and wilful to have been composed. In a world of its own; this is confident, eccentric, and highly musical. SimoniniÕs choice, use and development of both plundered sources and real time manipulation is masterful. A one-off. |

|
| The classic 1972 record reissued again, with additional track. The long sound-experimental and abstract sections are a tribute to the possibilities of the bass guitar, and still fresh and inspiring- exquisite sounds intelligently deployed, at once hypnotic, abrasive, engaging. Interspersed are post Soft Machine band pieces (John Marshall, Pye Hastings, Lol Coxhill, Gary Windo, Malcolm Griffiths, Nick Evans) which are fine, but very much of their time, and to me dated in a way that the other pieces are not. Recommended. |

| A great LP that came out originally in1975 in Norway, of compositions recorded piecemeal over a several weeks by Hugh, Dave Stewart, Elton Dean, Gary Windo, Marc Charig, Frank Roberts, and Mike Travis (with Nigel Morris [Isotope] on one track), that mixes great real-time playing with multi-tracked and vari-speeded basses. Rich sonically, and sure-footed musically, this record also exemplifies much of what was great about an era of rock experimentalism that was already being left behind, or buried under expensive technology. Exemplary. |

| Much improvised music seems to me to fail to make the transition from witnessed performance to abstracted recording. An event so much utilises and unifies all five of the senses - for every participant, each experiencing it under generally similar conditions: the room acoustics, the experienced flow of time and the nature of its interruption by this rather ritualised event, the inter-mutuality of a shared experience: that subtle human blending that occurs when people gather - and the rest. But listeners come to recordings under conditions of their own making - good or bad speakers or headphones operating at any volume from deafening to background murmur, sounding in a variety of acoustic spaces, and taken at widely disparate levels of concentration, none with the focus invoked by people collected together. And we listen with no access to visual, tactile or any other information relevant to what we are hearing. Records operate by different rules. Perhaps this is why not a lot of improvised music on record appeals to me. And therefore why, of the mountain of improvised music CDs in the world, so few find their way into our catalogue. The CD under review then is another exception. It seems to me to work as a listening object. Imaginative, musical, avoiding most of the clichés and language by which we recognise music as 'improvised', this offers constant and unexpected musicality, an unusual deployment of resources and a persuasive unfolding of ideas. |

| A very small, essentially handmade, edition of 300 copies of pieces researched and performed for the microtonal society at various venues in New York. Includes an alternative version of Ives's The Unanswered Question (prepared by Ives himself), a world premiere of Rimsky-Korsakov's Prelude for Strings, Julian Carrillo's unpublished I think of you, performed here on a 96-tone harp and voice, Harry Partch's Ulysses departs from the edge of the World for trumpet, string bass and 3 Boobams, Lou Harrison's excellent and interesting Simfony in Free Style (World Premiere) for strings, bassoon, flutes, horn, electronic hap and percussion, David Beardsley's Sonic Boom for guitar activated Korg Synthesiser tuned to 23-limit harmonic series, Edgard Varese's Graphs and Time (world premiere - worked up from a sketch of a graphic score made by EV for the legendary Teo Macero for jazz ensemble; I think this may have fared better in the hands of the jazz musicians it was envisioned for; in this version it doesn't add anything to Varese's reputation), John Cage's In the Name of the Holocaust for prepared piano and the seldom performed Gloria Coates' Lunar Loops for two guitars which are microtonally retuned in the course of the piece. Historic microtonal pieces are rare, so for those interested, this is a must have. |

| I'm someone not much enamoured of drones and this is, essentially, a 64 minute drone. But then it is a classic, bottomless, exquisite drone - the product of 106,476 clarinets "rumbling and growling" as composer Al Margolis has it, sped up slowed down and treated in uncountable ways - a pleasure to be in the room with. |

| Contained noise of various sorts, arranged in extreme and radically opposing segments; very clean, very orderly, listenable in a perverse way, with no narrative content, but an engaging aesthetic wholeness, this is a good introduction to Ikeda's minimal but strict aesthetic. In three sections, one mobile and balanced, one extended and hollow, the third ghost-like. Austere and not for everyone, this is, however, also a welcome reissue by Raster-Notion of his first release (1995), though the minimal packaging won't tell you that, or anything else, so there is historical value here too, if 12 years constitutes history. |
