ABSOLUTE ZERO: Crashing Icons Code:M=R.2 Price:
£12.50

| Based in Miami, this is a very interesting American band, ploughing its own furrow - whose accent is what they call 'prog' over there, but whose language is more complex by far. Pip Pyle adds a seasoned sophistication - in fact I think this is a great environment for him, he shines - but the whole ensemble is way past the foothills and keeping the oxygen packs handy. An excellent first CD, in a style that, features densely composed, layered, slightly post 5UU-school music - with some sung parts, high level rock/abstract improvisation. virtuoso playing and excellent clean, powerful production. In fact close and intelligent attention to detail - compositional, performative and sonic - is its hallmark. These are long-considered, sustained pieces. A fine debut.

ALLEN, DAEVID, HUGH HOPPER, CHRIS CUTLER: BRAINVILLE 3: Trial by Headline Code:ReRBV3-1 Price:
£12.50
Quantity in Basket: none
| | Three old hands out of Soft Machine, Gong and Henry Cow stretch already flexible musical material into one shape after another, then tie it in knots and generally have a fun with it. High quality recordings combined with seat-of-the-pants playing keep the tension high, underpinning a richly labile music, full of shape and colour that is constantly in motion. Compiled from recent concert recordings in Berlin, London and Tel Aviv, this clutch of extended songs should be to the taste of anyone familiar with the protagonists - or who longs to hear a little more straightforward instrumental playing in place of computers, heavy processing and sanitised post production. Brainville offers you tightrope walking, imagination, fast thinking, and a seasoned musicality: a social music, played by old friends, that blithely goes its own way. |

ANGELI, PAOLO: NITA. L'Angelo sul Trapezio Code:ReRPA2 Price:
£12.50
Quantity in Basket: none
| | This could hardly be more different from his first ReR CD- the extraordinary collection of solo prepared Sardinian Guitar pieces. Here, with a small orchestra of musicians (30 of Bologna's finest), is a programme of highly evolved, through composed pieces that cover half a planet of styles and influences. At one pole there are involved pieces that bring to mind Uncle Meat period Zappa, and contemporary experimental music - and at the other, the straightforward influence of traditional Sardinian folk music. In between there blooms a broad bouquet of combinations, each telling its own part of the story. Throughout, Paolo's compositional voice remains the single thread on which all these episodes are strung. This is a CD that has the feel of a major project that took years and a massive amount of work to complete, which is what it is and what it did. With an extravagant and beautiful 28 page full colour booklet of photographs and full texts. |

ANGELI, PAULO: Bucato Code:ReRPA1 Price:
£12.50
Quantity in Basket: none
| | Extraordinary player - extraordinary instrument. Paulo plays a highly modified and treated Sardinian Guitar - in many styles, some of them apparently impossible. Innovative techniques, a deeply musical sensibility and a rich, occasionally baffling, palette of sounds. Inevitably, comparisons will be made with Fred Frith, though not by me, Paulo is his own man. A fine and original work. |

ANGELI, PAULO: Tessuti Code:ReRPA3 Price:
£12.50
Quantity in Basket: none
| | The latest from Paulo on which he plays compositions by Fred Frith and Bjork - solo (though when you hear it, you definitely won't believe it) on his highly customised and extended, electrified, giant Sardinian guitar. A tour de force of technique and a musical pleasure. There is so much subtlety and so much attention to the minutiae of sound, and so much going on at any given time, that it is difficult to relate what you hear to just one person playing. Very concentrated, rewards listening to a few songs at a time. Though strangely, you could probably also dance to it. |

| | David Myers has invented an instrument (see the ReR Quarterly Volume 2, Number 3 for details) that produces sound, as it were out of nothing:Feedback music - it screams, it whispers, roars, ululates, explodes, divebombs, twitters and reverberates endlessly in vast and detailed soundscapes; it sets two sound-mirrors face to face creating infinite reflections. DM struggles to control this machine and to give its massive voices shape. The result is huge, intimate and altogether remarkable. |

ART BEARS: Hopes and Fears Code:ReRAB Price:
£12.50
Quantity in Basket: none
| The first Art Bears LP, mostly made by the band formerly known as Henry Cow and completed by Fred Frith, Chris Cutler and Dagmar Krause who went on, as '[Art Bears', to investigate this short song format further over the next two years, once Henry Cow had ceased to exist. Experimenting with the song form and the productive possibilities of the recording studio, this was hailed in its time (1978) as a landmark recording, and has been constantly in demand ever since. Therefore this new version, re-mastered by Bob Drake, and sounding for the first time like the original tapes. Repackaged.

BAKU: SYMPHONY OF SIRENS - SOUND EXPERIMENTS IN THE SOVIET AVANT GARDE. ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS AND RECON Code:ReRRAG12 Price:
£27.50
Quantity in Basket: none
| Clothbound 72 page 25 x 14 cm book with two CDs. CD1: The Symphony of Sirens. In 1922 Arseni Avraamov composed and conducted a visionary public sound event, activating the entire port city of Baku: its factory sirens, the ships horns of the entire Caspian flotilla, two batteries of artillery, several full infantry regiments, trucks, seaplanes, 25 steam locomotives, an array of pitched whistles and several massive choirs. Constantly referenced but forever lost, this extraordinary event is here painstakingly reconstructed and spatialised to approximate the original experience. Plus 39 other priceless sound works, including the legendary Victory over the Sun and other lost documents of Malevich, Dziga Vertov, Nikolai Foregger & his Orchestra of Noises, Sergei Prokofiev, El Lissitsky, Velimir Khlebnikov, Ivan Ignatyev & The Ego Futurist Group, Mikhail Matiushin, Alexei Kruchenykh, Georgi Yakoulov, Konstantin Melnikov, Igor Severyanin, Vasilisk Gnedov, Vladimir Kasyanov & The Futurist Circle, David Burliuk, Elena Guro, Olga Rozanova, H2SO4 Group, Simon Chikovani, The Nothingists, Vasily Kandinsky, Danil Harms, Igor Terent'ev, Mikhail Larionov, The Psycho-futurists group, Vasily Kamensky, Varvara Stepanova and Roman Jakobson. CD2: Enthusiasm! The Dombass Symphony (1930) is possibly Dziga Vertov's most revolutionary achievement: a symphony of abstract industrial noise for which a specially designed giant mobile recording system was constructed (it weighed over a ton) in order to capture the din of mines, furnaces and factories. For Vertov, the introduction of sound film didn't mean talkies, but the opportunity to collage, montage and splice together constructions of pure environmental noise. In addition, this CD collects together for the first time a definitive library of original sound documents from the Russian Avantgarde: contemporary recordings of Alexander Mossolov, Julius Meytuss, Roman Jakobson, Velimir Khlebnikov, Alexei Kruchenykh, Vladimir Mayakovsky, Lili Brik, David Burliuk, Sergei Esenin, Vasily Kamensky, Semen Kirsanov, V.I. Lenin, Anatoly Lunacharsky, Alexandra Kollontay, Leon Trotsky, Boris Pasternak, Anna Akhmatova, Osip Mandelshtam, Ilya Ehrenburg, Marina Tsvetaeva, Naum Gabo, Noton Pevsner and Dmitri Shostakovich. BOOK: A comprehensive overview of the complexity and breadth of the many early C20 Russian avantgarde movements, followed by detailed notes and contexts for the individual recordings - including summary biographies of the main actors; additional work notes about the process of the extraordinary Baku reconstruction; a bibliography, rare photographs, web research links, artwork, facsimiles of contemporary documents, a comparative timeline of European and Russian Avantgardes and the first English translation of an article by Avraamov about the symphony. This is a definitive library collection, some seven years in the making and possibly our most important release of recent years. |

| | Six years in the making, the visual/sonic art group Biota have finally completed their Sixth CD for ReR. Unique in their history and method, Biota painstakingly construct complex, organic structures that mix extensive studio processing and musique concréte techniques with a highly eclectic orchestra of acoustic and electronic resources - from kit drums, through mediaeval winds, strings and barrel organs to early experimental electronic instruments. Their works are always performance driven and interleaved with successive stages of lamination, imbrication, and radical pre- and post-processing, Quietly ploughing their own furrow for decades, Biota resemble no one, follow no one and, if the sonic arts were like the visual arts, would by now be a national treasure. |

| A long time coming, but as always, well worth the wait. Technically, this is the usual uncategorise-able mixture of primitive electronic, ethnic antique and conventional instruments, multilayered processing and meticulous construction. Aurally, vast, three dimensional sonic landscapes emerge in sharp Dalian detail, matched in the generous accompanying booklet with lapidary artworks from the visual component of the band. Extraordinary.

BLAST 4tet: Sift Code:ReRBlast02 Price:

Quantity in Basket: none
| | This is the second release, after a long wait, from this unique ensemble. Equally at home with the discipline of composition and the tightrope of improvisation Blast (now Blast 4tet) have evolved a fluid, pointillistic, unfathomable but transparent musical language that seamlessly integrates - over very short durations - highly complex writing and very free ranging improvisation, allowing the two languages to merge and combine into a new kind of logical exposition that makes sense but can't be reverse-engineered into its component parts. This is a music that lives through detail and exposition; neither resolving into composition, nor able properly to be understood as improvisation. In this respect Blast have solved a problem that has defeated many in the last 40 years. |

BLAST: Altrastrata Code:ReRBlast1 Price:
£12.50
Quantity in Basket: none
| In my opinion this is far and away the best thing this group has ever done (many will doubtless disagree) since they have moved from the complex rigidity of their earlier material into an altogether looser, more organic fluidity that retains some of the best of their organizing and compositional ability in an environment that, musically, has space to breath. The inclusion of drummer and amplified, processed percussionist Fabrizio Spera seems central to this new approach, at once improvisational, extended in tonal and rhythmic subtlety, and still locking into clear, coordinated stretches of translucent writing. An important release.

BOLE, ANDY: Ramshackle Pier Code:AdHoc5 Price:
£12.50
Quantity in Basket: none
| | Andy Bole, known to our very old adherents through the remarkable Bole Drawings, was and is a very fine guitarist in (loosely) the British style (Jansch, Graham, Renbourne), with oriental shadings. This is a fine collection of his own (mostly) acoustic pieces, joined on 3 tracks by Bill Gilonis (electric guitar, bass, piano, percussion) and on one by Catherine Jauniaux (voice), the guitars are both single and multitracked. The title track launches into arranged complexity, dissonance and epic structure. And the tracks past this central point agrowmore sonically strange and atmospheric. On its release (1984) the LP was voted album of the year by the specialist acoustic magazine Folk Roots, and Andy went on to make many more, and to play internationally with the named and famous). A solidly musical, diverse, imaginative and excellently recorded piece of work. Highly recommended. |

£12.50
Quantity in Basket: none
| | A few of you will already have heard either the Hostess's first wild American release or founder Jewlia Eisenberg's ear-opening Tzadik CD of last year. The Hostesses here are an extraordinary 7 piece band, tight, a little rockish, comprising bass, drums, guitar, fiddle, various horns, accordion and other occasional instruments (singing saw, for instance) - but the work is distinguished by the amazing vocal arrangements (everyone sings, and exceptionally). Additive rhythms stretched harmonies, pinpoint playing; this is evolved material, executed with great skill - and great looseness. Some traditional pieces from Bulgaria, Palestine, Transylvania and Southern America appear in very personalised arrangements alongside original songs that go way beyond world music genres. |

| | This essential piece of history at last reissued, redesigned and repackaged. Keystone works from the various streams of musique concrete, electronic music, soundscape, electroacoustics and plunderphonics - including two masterworks from Eastern Europe, a territory traditionally overlooked in collections of this medium. It comprises: John Oswald's 'Parade', a complex work drawn and extended from Satie's celebrated ballet composition of 1917; Georg Katzer's monumental 'Aide Memoire' ('7 nightmares from the 1000 year night'), a terrifying document of collage, electronic manipulation, original composition and sound documents from 1933-45; Lutz Glandien's exquisitely economical, sonically powerful and surprising 'Es Lebe' for Tape and Tuba; Steve Moore's groundbreaking 'A Quiet Gathering' (chamber music for environmental sounds) - a multi-layered 22 minute work made only from captured non-musical materials; Jaroslav Kr_ek's miniature electronic gem based on nightingale songs and the proto-plunder legend 'Ommagio a Jerry Lee Lewis' by Richard Trythall. An indispensable collection in my view. |

Such works belong nowhere and begin to constitute a new genre; this is one of the pioneering works in that genre. |

£12.50
Quantity in Basket: none
| The first of two tracks is a long Requiem which for me turned out to be a very serious piece of work - and unrepeatable, captured at a concert in New Mexico. Whatever were we thinking? It's followed by a studio piece, mixing raw binaural sound with sophisticated and radical secondary processing. I use my extended electrified kit and Tom his state of the art sample and real-time processing rig and we try to work as a single, highly complex and sophisticated instrument, with two brains and a mind of its own.

CUTLER, CHRIS, THOMAS DIMUZIO, FRED FRITH: Golden State (LP) Code:ReR196.966550 Price:
£17.75
Quantity in Basket: none
| A limited Edition of 1969 numbered copies pressed into 180 gsm virgin vinyl and rather beautifully (and horribly expensively, as it turned out) packaged. The music was recorded in California in 1999 with guest Beth Custer (clarinet) on one track. Carefully mastered by Tom Dimuzio in wide frequency, solid footprint, broad compass stereo. Solid and expansive. Though we waved goodbye to vinyl decades ago, we felt this release was made to be an LP - a CD just wouldn't be the same, sonically, visually or ontologically. And of course we took advantage of the exaggerated dimensions and physicality to make it a thing visually to savour. Off the groove, Dimuzio, Cutler, Frith and Custer do what they do and you get a ringside seat - as well as something exquisite to look at and play with while you listen. A thing of beauty. The first 500 will be pressed on white vinyl, so please order early to get these. Outside Europe, please add £3 for postage and packing. Sorry. |

| Recorded at two concerts in Lowell and Portland in March 1999. Great blocks of sound alive with detail, sometimes massive, sometimes attenuated near to silence; sometimes it's hard to know what instruments if any are involved. Growling and Tearing. Glacial movements alive with an emergent order? Process of becoming? Two guys making a lot of noise? Nice object.
