Mostly written and played by Marc Hollander using a Farfisa organ, clarinets and bassclarinet, middle eastern percussion, mandolin, flute, xylophone, saxes and drum machines (a rare example of their effective and sensible use to be what they are). Full of additive rhythms, iterations and catchy melodic material, this music is at the same time, intelligently minimal, deceptively simple and satisfyingly crammed with detail. Aksak Maboul was one of the seven actual RIO groups, and this LP was why.

Art Zoyd was one of the 7 original RIO groups and this is the classic 1976 LP of the early quartet version: guitar, trumpet, viola, bass and percussion, and marks the first appearance of this remarkable group with its radically unfamiliar sound, and distinctive musical language. Intense and explosive, Art Zoyd could be terrifying, eerie, neurotic, dreamy, suspenseful, driving or rather academically musical - changing from one mood or idea to another from bar to bar. Their instrumentation (for the most part without drums) gave them immense flexibility, and no loss in power. This is the first reissue on CD of this early classic - re-mastered from vinyl (because the original masters were lost; it was re-recorded in 1980, with an expanded line-up - see 'Symponie below). This is in all respects a large record, full of ideas, clean sounds and layered atmosphere. Most of it is played by keyboardist and drummer Balestracci, with many electronic aids and much overdubbing, though Guitarist Reginald Trigaux and Bassist Guy Segers both appear. Epic pieces, fully evolved and arranged, with more than a little of the Magma/Univers Zero/Present about them, though written on a much broader canvas. Instrumentally it's impressive; also in its focus and tension. Nicely recorded: transparent, but powerful when it needs to be.

Many will remember Hasse - Samla Mammas Manna's drummer from the glory days. On this CD of his own compositions, made with the legendary Mats Oberg on keyboards and Roine Stolt - of the equally legendary Flower Kings - on basses and guitars, Hasse also plays Marimba and other tuned percussions. The CD is a dense, nicely produced, excellently played collection of linked material that ranges from old Samla style material through Zappa, Instrumental, Polka, Progressive Rock, a little Baroque and always performance music: that is, music that depends on technique, imagination and listening. There is also a little postmodern mixing of materials, use of tape and theatrical atmospheres; it's the full monty. Anybody who liked that music of the '70s should find this to their taste.

Samla Mammas Manna's exemplary drummer presents 2 hours of great music, 1 hour 10 minutes of this is the main programme: studio recorded, re-processed and intercut with all manner of entertaining footage. This is not just a performance document, though it is that too. The music retains the spirit of the Samlas (one of the 7 original RIO bands) and is complex, technically accomplished and highly entertaining. The performances are strong, lively and determinedly eccentric. This is probably as close to '70s RIO as you're likely to get on a DVD.Then there are a further 50 minutes of extra pieces from the circus and various other projects Hasse has been involved with in the last decade. Fine work.

Reissue of the 1989 dance music album, with Joey Baron, Tom Cora and George Cartwright. One of Fred's open field type compositions - where parallel events proceed serenely, coinciding half-unpredictably, but still often enough to sound connected. There is continuity in modular repetition but so many overlays, small alterations, emergent details and new material that the sonic terrain they invoke is constantly mutating and constantly unpredictable (even after several auditions). Continuity is here irregularly interrupted by disruptive events, always settling back into semi-stable planes. Re-mastered and repackaged

Fred's third LP for Ralph Records, back in 1983, was a collection of four-track home studio songs (and a couple of instrumental pieces) in which Fred played all the instruments (exceptions: two bass cameos from Tina Curran and Bill Laswell, and some great drum samples from Hans Bruinnsson. Causing raised eyebrows at the time (from, as Fred calls them 'progressive music snobs' - of which I guess I was one) for its apparent simplicity and departure from what was then thought of as Fred Style, this work has matured with age and perspective and no longer seems (to this former critic) to stand outside the oeuvre, but rather to exemplify a persistent strand within it. Echoes appear in many later works. In context it's a record that makes sense - what was all the fuss about? - and it has become a record that's refreshing to listen to. And political - political and personal. In fact, as well as being a very rewarding, darkish, toe-tapper of a record, it seems also to have tapped an important biographical moment. There are some great guitar sounds, production ideas and of course the expected exemplary playing of everything, all the time. A good argument for reissues. Very nicely re-mastered, and in a nice new package.

One of the most original, impressive and highly respected of all the experimental groups to have come out of Italy in the 1970s, Picchio dal Pozzo were also one of the early invitees to the canonical 'Recommended Sampler', and would have been in RIO, had RIO lasted another year - and had the group not folded up and disappeared before anyone had realised it was there. In the last decade the record was reissued briefly in Japan, then It disappeared again. We have now re-mastered it and put it back into the public domain, where it belongs. Copying no one, though there is some Zappa influence - Picchio had a unique and highly developed style of composition that was not only out of step with it's own time but which sounds contemporary still. Highly composed and devoid of jazz phrasing and riffs with solos, this record achieves maximum musical effect with minimum instrumental means through close attention to timbre, dynamics and expressed tempi and a kind of deep complexity that sounds simple but changes with each listening. A lot of ideas subtly developed - rather than experimented with; a one-off classic.

(Henry Cow Definitive Reissue series No. 4)In 1974, Henry Cow took a sabbatical while it considered what to do next. SlappHappy meanwhile was planning its second record for Virgin. One night the trio showed up at the quartet's door and proposed that the two groups make the second Slapphappy LP together. So incompatible - Slapphappy was making eccentric pop songs and Henry Cow was composing complex epic instrumentals - so how could a merger fail? Henry Cow jumped at the chance and Desperate Straights -was the result. It's still a gem to my ears, and now at last it's possible to release it, properly re-mastered (by Bob Drake), its sound closer to the original tapes even than our earlier Nimbus vinyl pressing. Great songs, great arrangements, great performances and Dagmar on top of her form... real people in a room together, playing straight to tape. Those were the days..

The mid '70s were militant in Italy, radical politics permeated daily life; demonstrations and autonomous actions were a way of life. More often than not, Stormy Six were somewhere on the soundtrack. Not with simple anthems or protest, but complex, subtle, nuanced songs, always beautifully arranged for combinations of strings (guitars, mandolins, balalaika, violin, bass), drums, some wind instruments and several voices. Some Influences from Gentle Giant are often remarked upon, though I think SS are way more interesting and write much better tunes. A collection of Live recordings made between 1976 and 1982 in Italy, France, Germany and at the London RIO festival, covering the whole range of the group's repertoire and a lot more that didn't appear on the records, much of it in the involved chamber mode, but also straying into abstract, experimental, Zappaesque silliness, weird and downright eccentric territories that are absent from the official records. The second CD is more or less music-theatre. The sound quality is variable, so this is for those who know the group already, but for them it's pretty eye-opening. Warning to prog mavens, there is a long stretch of comedy material here and ReR will not accept responsibility for any loss of cool that may occur. An interesting, mixed up, band with a lot of conflicting dimensions all out on the table here. Fascinating.

An expanded line-up with, on some tracks, trumpet, marimba, cello and acoustic guitar. A very clean recording with close attention to sound and atmosphere -with the effect, curiously, of making the whole band sound rather anodyne and surgical. Sampled sounds add to this general lifelessness. I hate to say it, but even where the writing is lively, the rendition is mechanical and the rhythms more numerical than felt. It has its moments, of course, and glimpses of a future clearing (the track Mellotronic, for example) but I miss the playing, the feeling, the power, the intensity of the music of the earlier records. Especially of Daniel himself, one of the most original drummers the last 40 years has produced and who is here very reduced - as are all the players, a result , I suspect, of the recording method and lack of ensemble paying. That's my dissident view. Fans I am sure will beg to differ.
