This is a first recording of a reconstruction of the earliest (1924) version for sixteen synchronised player pianos, 2 grand pianos, seven percussionists (4 xylophones, 4 bass drums, tam tam, pitched electric bells, siren and aeroplane propellers) which was never performed (because impossible at the time). It was a reduced version that caused such a sensation at its premiere in Paris. This realisation was made possible, finally, through computer and midi power (to co-ordinate those 16 player pianos). An historic recording of a groundbreaking work. The rest of the CD contains other pieces for player pianos, percussion and electronics by John Cage and Lou Harrisson, Richard Grayson, Amadeo Roldan and Felix Mendelssohn (a version of the presto from the 4th Symphony remade for 16 player pianos). Classic.

Highly interesting collection (bar one, I think) of pieces for virtual pianist, influenced by Stockhausen, Cage, Feldman, Boulez, Nancarrow 'New music has enabled anyone with a sense of sound and form to make great music' says Martin Archer, and then puts his sequencer and various devices on the line as proof. A courageous man, and you the jury. I think this is a fascinating record both for it's proposition, application and listening quality.

An important collection, not least for the oldest track, dated 1930, by the very elusive Jack Ellitt. If this dating is true, here is a genuinely groundbreaking work. Ellitt, who at this time was making soundtracks for the New Zealand abstract film-maker Len Lye - and whose later work was done for the most part privately, even secretly, to be tragically lost after his death in 2001 - has produced here musique concrete 29 years ahead of time. Presumably done on optical soundtrack (like its contemporary, Ruttman's 'Weekend') this is abstract, manipulated sound. The CD continues with a 1951 recording of Percy Grainger's 'Free Music' machines, a snatch of the Melbourne Dada Group (including Barry Humphries) and 11 more fascinating extracts of work by people most of us have never heard of - and whose inclusion here makes a very important contribution to the library of musical experimentation of the period. Importantly, not only electronic music is collected, but also small ensemble compositions operating far from the mainstream of contemporary music - even at this time. For instance McKim's 'Monotony for 8 trumpets' or Cantrill's 'Soundtrack for Elkon' are properly experimental compositions, while Nagorcka follows Cage with a piece solely for televisions, record players and radios. This is an important - and an enjoyable - document, with a useful booklet and offers a timely reminder of where we were 30 years ago, putting today's offerings into perspective.

Normal-sized CD in LP-style sleeve with a seventeen and a half minute piece made in 1974 using raw and prepared piano material, strongly transformed through tape manipulation, and thus retaining many of the performative and musical qualities of the original material. An extremely good example of the aesthetic and imaginative qualities of this genre at a time when it was still marginal and attracted interesting people with ideas. It works because of - and not despite - its limitations, exploring a narrow field with rigour and elan. A modest gem.

Each piano etude is 90 seconds long, each employs a different equal tempered scale - from 5 to 43 notes to the octave. Samplers and sequencers perform, though the sound is pianistic throughout. This belongs firmly in that small school of those following up on earlier experiments with microtanality (Ives, Nancarrow, Wyshnegradsky, Carillo, Grainger &c.). These pieces constantly shift the tunings, and they run together, making the experience even more precarious. Fascinating, and educational. The higher numbers, naturally, sound the strangest and the best. Perhaps best listened to in smaller chunks.

Early works dating mainly from1942-47 and all written for dance performances, (except The Perilous Night and A Room, which are concert pieces. Nicely performed and recorded, these are rhythmical, often radically reiterative, riff-driven, works, centred upon the legendary 1944 concert that defined the Cage/ Cunningham partnership and both established and defined the prepared piano as a viable instrument. Played by Philipp Vandre, these are Hessischer Rundfunk radio recordings made in 2001. Useful notes in English, German and French.

Exquisite, unsurprisingly. This is a sound only DVD - in this format because of the length - 3 hours (each piece is about 90 minutes). It will play on a DVD player and on a computer. Nice package too.

Reissue of the much missed CRI CD. The title track is a 29 minute piece for viola and small ensemble, conducted by Feldman himself: endlessly suspended and endlessly listenable - it could go on forever; cleanly articulated, always concentrated, in constant motion but without a goal; just rich in its going. There are longeurs that sink into silence, and there is great, and unfamiliar, use of blurry, quiet percussion. It is a work that transfigures time into pure qualia. If you are not familiar with Feldman, this, or Rothko Chapel, would be a good place to start. There are two other pieces on the CD, inhabiting the same timeless zone, 'Why Patterns', with Feldman himself at the piano, and 'False relationships and the extended ending.' A long cat and mouse performance with Brubeck's 'Blue Rondo a la Turque' forms the centrepiece; as cavalier with time as the early Dollar Brand.

I'd go so far as to say that this is important work. Excellent.

Steve's fourth CD for us is a remarkable set of pieces for mediated acoustic piano that operates in the shadowy territory between what is playable and what is programmable; between narrative simplicity and performative complexity; between hopeful intentionality and flawless execution. Unusually, Steve has put our ear right inside the piano, sans artificial reverberations and blurring tools and, over the course of the CD, various musical dialects are explored and extended - from the plausible through the exquisite to the impossible. MacLean also mines a subtle complexity that offers more on each audition and, occasionally, an extreme (of Nancarrowistic speed or sound amplified through gongs). The process remains impenetrable, so what remains is the listening. In Steve's long and varied musical career he has consistently explored new compositional techniques and new technologies (he teaches at Berklee in Boston) and this is no exception; a unique take on the acoustic piano.

The last piece (Scelsi) is for amplified piano. The entire CD flows organically from start to finish.

Active since the late '70s in the field of electronic music but more visibly in performances, installations and sound art, Gordon Monahan is famous for his extensions and deconstruction of pianos. This LP carries two classic works: Piano Mechanics - seven pieces that explore the outer reaches of the instrument as a source of complex sound - avoiding any conventional playing at all - a live recording for CBC made in 1984; and Large Piano Magnified - 9 pieces for studio manipulated piano recordings, made for CBC's Two New Hours in 1985. Already part of the Sound Art canon. Speaker Swinging explores the Doppler effect by manually swinging several independent loudspeakers in large arcs in an acoustic space. The speakers emit minimal oscillator tones which foreground the pitch-shifting caused by their motion. Eerie and fascinating, and it tells you a lot about ear/brain sensitivity; you can really sense this motion as motion. It could not be simulated. Recorded for CBC in 1987. On the B side is Monahan's Long Aolian Piano - recordings of a construction made with 50ft piano wires strung into the wind and fixed at one end to an upright piano that acts as a sounding board. Double fold-out insert with diagrams, notes, credits and an interview with GM. Last copies, LP now out of print.

A collection of contemporary piano pieces (except for the title track). Works by Henry Cowell, Charles Ives (an unpublished score of Celestial Railroad), William Bolcom, John Zorn, Frank Zappa and Fred Rzewski, well chosen and excellently performed. Altogether a fine CD. Except for the title track. I have no idea what it's doing here. Tomoko Mukaiyama merely sings - and she's no singer, nor can you really understand the sub Zappa text she approximates (it is printed on the strange plastic fold out sleeve). The music is risible, the performers uncredited. Why ruin a fine CD with this I don't know. Sensibly the track only take up 4 minutes and is at the end of the CD so you can skip it. Highly peculiar, ungainly packaging. Still worth it for the piano music.

Quiet, slow, exquisite piano pieces. Not quite 'furniture music' because it does seem to want to be heard, nor Eno- style wallpaper music, because it's neither repetitive nor mechanical; nevertheless it colours the air and creates space rather than intrude on the ear and demand attention. A very medium to work in, here impressively well achieved.

Three related works: Quando Stanno Morendo, Canciones a Guiomar and Omaggio a Emilio Vedova, the first (1982) for four women's voices, bass flute, cello and live electronics, the second (1962-3) for soprano, six-voice women's choir and small ensemble, the last (1960) a short, important early tape piece. These are spooky, tense, ethereal works, filled with silences and surging noise; nothing is as solid as is suggested by the instrumentation (which is mostly transformed through real time electronic processing); the women's voices are mostly attenuated, high and diaphanous, or abstracted and distant, and the compositions hang by a thread. These are very substantial works, and significant historical documents.

A fine collection of piano pieces by known and unknown composers written between 1912 and 1920 that were performed by Nelly Van Doesberg at Bauhaus, De Stijl and Dada events between 1921-25. It includes pieces by Josef Hauer (much referenced but seldom heard), Honneger, Poulenc, Schoenberg and Satie and names lesser known (and therefore more interesting). These are excellent, very listenable, and mostly very short, pieces. Good sleeve-notes with some appropriate documents.

An extremely interesting and listenable suite of 4 early Rags stretched and twisted, rearticulated and embellished through the medium of disklavier programming. Reminiscent sometimes of Conlan Nancarrow, but essentially different in approach, though equally 'unplayable'. A well conceived, well realised project which updates the player piano. Also includes Enclosure, for electronics.

Russian release of a remarkable concert where Riley swings through a programme of very varied music with a lot of additive rhythms, strongly inflected by jazz, show music, ragtime (prodigiously in 7/4), speed, tonal architectures with serious rhythmic underpinnings, relaxation, post jazz elaborations, pure pianistics and some piled up repetitions. A pleasure to listen to and conceived and performed entirely without braggadocio. The recording is fine and the music superb. Limited Supply.

Document of a double piano and Indian percussion concert from 1975 featuring pioneer of American experimental music David Rosenboom, multi-genre pianist J.B.Floyd and percussionist Trichy Sankaran, comprising for the most part very fast materials organised in cyclic reiterant formats, similar to much of the minimal music of the time; except that this performance is infused with a passion and fiery improvisational propulsion that is sometimes breathtaking. Hurtling moments of Nancarrowesque and then Coltranesque energy wheel around in bizarre non-developmental structures. This isn't comparable to anything I can think of and it's one of the joys of recording that such events don't disappear without a trace.

Fine playing. Useful notes. To be taken in small doses for best appreciation.

Excellent collection, beautifully played, of works Satie wrote for his collaborations with Picasso, including the two cubist ballets 'Parade' and 'Mercure', both of which are here interestingly presented both in orchestra versions and piano transcriptions. A collection of piano pieces played at, or written for, various Dada events in Paris between 1921-3. One or two pieces are well known but most will be heard here for the first time. The whole CD is nicely programmed, getting progressively stranger before finally returning to more familiar ground. The Ribemont-Dessaignes pieces are particularly remarkable - you couldn't date them - and for anybody interested in the history of musical ideas, very valuable. They are world premiere recordings, so this is the first opportunity to hear them. The same is true of the three Mesens pieces. The collection ends with a restored 1925 recording of Stravinsky's played by Marcelle Meyer, the pianist who performed at the two Dada events listed here.Nice booklet, with useful notes and illustrations. A pleasant, eccentric and - for the recording premiere pieces - useful CD.

Transparency's 20th RA release - and a real gem: a complete two and a half hour concert in high broadcast quality by the 29 piece early '70s band with June Tyson. Everyone on top form, it evolves like a great nomadic civilisation with one fine solo after another, great arrangements, lengthy extraterrestrial Moog solos, some great vibraphone and a succession of classic Ra compositions. And it's impressively cheap. The DVD contains a short interview with Sun Ra filmed on the day of the concert which has not been seen since its original broadcast. The whole thing licensed from The Finnish Broadcasting Company, with nice photos in the booklet. Tracks for those who wish to know are: Stargazers, Enlightment, Love in Outer Space, Watusi, Calling Planet Earth, Space is the Place, Angels ands Demons at play, Satellites are Spinning, Second stop is Jupiter, Somewhere Else, Nature's God, Sometimes I feel like a Motherless Child and a couple of Discipline numbers.

Restored to its original luminous form, this was one of Ra's great classic era releases - with a band in radically stripped-down form: John Gilmore, Michael Ray (trumpet) and the minimal but perfect Luqman Ali (drums). Ra plays piano and a lot of electronic keyboards, including the mysterious Crumar Mainman, which he describes as being 'like a piano, organ, clavichord, cello, violin and brass instruments' and which also, importantly, has a facility for pre-programmed bass-lines and electronic percussion - which Ra uses constantly and to great effect in this small ensemble setting. Very electronic, often rhythmical and melodic, always economical, these tracks are like no other jazz ensemble and, although recognisable as Ra, are also unlike any of his other ensembles. A classic
