  BAKSHI, ALEXANDER: Hamlet is Dying
Code:CDLA00028
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Three works for performance (music-theatre).The first, Hamlet is Dying, for 2 violins, three string ensembles, Double Bass funeral train and Bass drum brought to my mind an echo of Broch's 'Death of Virgil' as Hamlet's life swirls around him and some external sounds penetrate following his fatal poisoning. Part music, more dramaturgy, a convincing and concentrated work. The second piece, Sidur Mystery, for Soprano and percussion ensemble seems less concentrated, certainly on the record, without the seeing and the being there. You can compensate a bit by turning the Volume up and the light down, but this is still more of a document than a listening piece. It's interesting but not gripping. The third, Shostakovich Concerto, for Violin and Strings (a piece about, not by Shostakovich) . Gideon Kremer is the main violinist on the first and third pieces. The sleeve notes are almost worth the price of the CD, Bakshi writes about his idea of theatre-music, about the unique and critical quality of individual performance and about the deep relation of sound, space and presence in performance that is centred on dramaturgy and not dependent on words or any separable element. And there's the rub, on the CD, of course, only the sound remains. Nevertheless, there is an intelligence at work here that even information of is worth the having. Russian release. Limited supply.

BAKU: SYMPHONY OF SIRENS - SOUND EXPERIMENTS IN THE SOVIET AVANT GARDE. ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS AND RECON BAKU: SYMPHONY OF SIRENS - SOUND EXPERIMENTS IN THE SOVIET AVANT GARDE. ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS AND RECON
Code:ReRRAG12
Price: £27.50
Quantity in Basket: none
Clothbound 72 page 25 x 14 cm book with two CDs.
CD1: The Symphony of Sirens. In 1922 Arseni Avraamov composed and conducted a visionary public sound event, activating the entire port city of Baku: its factory sirens, the ships horns of the entire Caspian flotilla, two batteries of artillery, several full infantry regiments, trucks, seaplanes, 25 steam locomotives, an array of pitched whistles and several massive choirs. Constantly referenced but forever lost, this extraordinary event is here painstakingly reconstructed and spatialised to approximate the original experience. Plus 39 other priceless sound works, including the legendary Victory over the Sun and other lost documents of Malevich, Dziga Vertov, Nikolai Foregger & his Orchestra of Noises, Sergei Prokofiev, El Lissitsky, Velimir Khlebnikov, Ivan Ignatyev & The Ego Futurist Group, Mikhail Matiushin, Alexei Kruchenykh, Georgi Yakoulov, Konstantin Melnikov, Igor Severyanin, Vasilisk Gnedov, Vladimir Kasyanov & The Futurist Circle, David Burliuk, Elena Guro, Olga Rozanova, H2SO4 Group, Simon Chikovani, The Nothingists, Vasily Kandinsky, Danil Harms, Igor Terent'ev, Mikhail Larionov, The Psycho-futurists group, Vasily Kamensky, Varvara Stepanova and Roman Jakobson.
CD2: Enthusiasm! The Dombass Symphony (1930) is possibly Dziga Vertov's most revolutionary achievement: a symphony of abstract industrial noise for which a specially designed giant mobile recording system was constructed (it weighed over a ton) in order to capture the din of mines, furnaces and factories. For Vertov, the introduction of sound film didn't mean talkies, but the opportunity to collage, montage and splice together constructions of pure environmental noise. In addition, this CD collects together for the first time a definitive library of original sound documents from the Russian Avantgarde: contemporary recordings of Alexander Mossolov, Julius Meytuss, Roman Jakobson, Velimir Khlebnikov, Alexei Kruchenykh, Vladimir Mayakovsky, Lili Brik, David Burliuk, Sergei Esenin, Vasily Kamensky, Semen Kirsanov, V.I. Lenin, Anatoly Lunacharsky, Alexandra Kollontay, Leon Trotsky, Boris Pasternak, Anna Akhmatova, Osip Mandelshtam, Ilya Ehrenburg, Marina Tsvetaeva, Naum Gabo, Noton Pevsner and Dmitri Shostakovich.
BOOK: A comprehensive overview of the complexity and breadth of the many early C20 Russian avantgarde movements, followed by detailed notes and contexts for the individual recordings - including summary biographies of the main actors; additional work notes about the process of the extraordinary Baku reconstruction; a bibliography, rare photographs, web research links, artwork, facsimiles of contemporary documents, a comparative timeline of European and Russian Avantgardes and the first English translation of an article by Avraamov about the symphony. This is a definitive library collection, some seven years in the making and possibly our most important release of recent years.

BITTOVA, IVA/VLADIMIR VACLAVEC: Bile Inferno (dbl)
Code:MAM055-2
Price: £23.27
Quantity in Basket: none
Iva on top form and multi-tracked with the great Vladimir V and playing, between them, violin, electronics, guitar, mandolin, kailimba, percussion and singing, with numerous guests, including Tom Cora. A very great collection of complex, subtle and inventive pieces, exquisitely arranged and full of surprises. Piled up cycles of strange additive rhythms with winding interpolations, in the Dunaj style, but in a layered soundscape .. My personal favourite work of Iva's for a while. Two CD's in a substantial box with a fat book of texts and photographs. Pretty indispensable.

From the Bang on a Can team, a fine ensemble comprising piano, bass, percussion, electric guitars, banjo, cello, clarinet and bassclarinet performing a programme of Iva's inimitable songs, very nicely arranged. Iva herself is on top form and these treatments work well. Her best since Bile Inferno - recommended.

Long awaited new CD (1995). Iva, joined sometimes by Pavel or amplified metal objects puts voice and violin through hoops.

CHADIMA, MIKOLAS : The City (db) CHADIMA, MIKOLAS : The City (db)
Code:BP0123
Price: £21.74
Quantity in Basket: none
Part of Czech underground history, written and occasionally performed at the end of 1979 and eventually released on vinyl after the changes in 1989, this has all the characteristic qualities of the best of the productions of that period (extended rock with an unmistakable Czech inflection); especially volume 2, which is great. No Western group ever sounded like this. (In fact the only non MC song here, a radically reinterpreted 'Sunshine of your Love' could function as a kind of E-W Rosetta stone. A classic.

Code:CHADIMA,MIKOLASandPAVELFAJT:TransparentPeople
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Miklolas Chadima's last record Pseudodemocritus - in my opinion a fine piece of work - did badly with most of you, but undaunted, let me recommend this one, a collaboration with master drummer Pavel Fajt (who also plays groove box and electronics). Mikolas takes the guitars, bass, keyboards, saxophones and sings dark texts (he has a very charismatic voice). Studio work, obviously, with a lot of overdubbing, but a happy combination of people and sounds, especially Pavel’s electric stringed wheel – no I won’t explain. A kind of rock, but updated; songs but with imaginative settings. The wholly transparent booklet is charming, but uncompromising.

Code:BP0180-2BOX
Price: £38.78
Quantity in Basket: none
An important figure in the Czech underground and the history of experimental rock, with a music cast in the quintessentially Czech style: strong, full of ideas, mature and intelligent. The box collects Chadima's work through the difficult '80s - when you had to be pretty serious to take your chances with a paranoiac and unpredictable state apparatus. While the Plastic People were celebrated in the world outside, and spurred on the declaration of Charter 77, they were in fact just part of a wider movement whose actors remain largely unknown outside Czecoslovakia where, for two decades, making 'anti-social' music would ensure that you didn't get a licence to perform - making public, paid concerts next to impossible. And to persist was to court arrest - so the music went underground, played at secret locations and under assumed names; recorded in basements or unofficial concerts and released in Samizdat tape editions. These 6 CDs, re-mastered from the original tapes, give some sense of the life of this Czech counterculture, and of the quality and professionalism of the work they produced under such severely antagonistic conditions. The first CD set alongside the later I984WELL - a 40 minute, single, abstract work - mark the extremes encompassed here: from insistent rock to explosions and dark, abstract atmospheres. A lot of fine musicians went through these various MCH ensembles whose line ups all featured bass, guitar and drums, with most of them adding various horns and lo-tech electronics. Not be to everyone's taste, perhaps, but these CDs are important historical documents and they do go a little way toward setting the record straight about what was going on musically in Eastern Europe - which was quite as innovative as anywhere outside. Most of this material has not been readily accessible until now and is not available in any other form. For those intrigued but not ready to spend try Chadima's Pseudodemocritus first. In a black box with a very informative 40pp booklet.

CMCD [REISSUE]: Six Classics CMCD [REISSUE]: Six Classics
Code:ReRCMCD-RE
Price: £12.50
Quantity in Basket: none
This essential piece of history at last reissued, redesigned and repackaged. Keystone works from the various streams of musique concrete, electronic music, soundscape, electroacoustics and plunderphonics - including two masterworks from Eastern Europe, a territory traditionally overlooked in collections of this medium. It comprises: John Oswald's 'Parade', a complex work drawn and extended from Satie's celebrated ballet composition of 1917; Georg Katzer's monumental 'Aide Memoire' ('7 nightmares from the 1000 year night'), a terrifying document of collage, electronic manipulation, original composition and sound documents from 1933-45; Lutz Glandien's exquisitely economical, sonically powerful and surprising 'Es Lebe' for Tape and Tuba; Steve Moore's groundbreaking 'A Quiet Gathering' (chamber music for environmental sounds) - a multi-layered 22 minute work made only from captured non-musical materials; Jaroslav Kr_ek's miniature electronic gem based on nightingale songs and the proto-plunder legend 'Ommagio a Jerry Lee Lewis' by Richard Trythall. An indispensable collection in my view.

CZECH NEW MUSIC FROM THE 60'S: Agon Ensemble
Code:F10048-2
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
A splendid and much appreciated collection; unusual and prophetic music, all of which is uncompromisingly excellent. Particular mention for Berg: music in twelfth-tones (each tone divided in twelve) and Komorous (enormously inventive, especially the piece for mouth organs and bass drum). This is music that was missed, showing that the spirit of experiment lived and thrived, heard or unheard, every- where, and it is still coming to light. Highly Recommended.

  DAMA DAMA: Dama Dama

A percussion ensemble with a strange and interesting repertoire, drawn mostly from Czech composers of the last 40 years - and many from the last 6 years. Occasional appearance of non percussion instruments and rock/industrial/theatre aesthetics. A few very off-the-wall moments here. An interesting and unusual record.

SLOVENIA. One of the trio, Borut Krzisnik will be well known to you from our Points East release some years ago. Decidedly up to date, played and processed compositions- skidding off techno here and there - and other genres too, but varied, often great, ideas, well realised. A group (with guests). Excellent sound and packaging.

  DETONI, DUBRAVKO: With ACEZANTEZ
Code:PD11
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Absurdly ignored and important Croatian composer with his 5 piece performing ensemble (recorders, horns, piano, harpsichord, Celeste, Organ, Glockenspiel, Viola, Double bass, Tuba and a lot of Tape). You can't imagine the noises they can make by looking at the instrumentation. This is a long missed collection of his work and adds to the little that slowly emerges of what was happening in experimental music in the ignored east. An important document.

3 pieces by Iancu, 2 by Ana Maria. Central pillar is the massive Incantatio for Large orchestra, percussion and Viola, a full spectrum work that pits a virtuoso soloist against a post global warming sonic weather system. In all cases the soloist is the never less than impressive Cornelia Petroiu.

New CD by Andrea and Dorota, the usual mixture - singing and dual cellos, inevitably a bit bittova-esque but rather ambitiously produced this time; less of the simple charm and more weight, a development which is curiously distancing to my ear. It's hard to fault but less easy to like.

GANELIN CHEKASIN TARASOV: Golden years of the Soviet New Jazz Vol IV
Code:GY413/416
Price: £29.38
Quantity in Basket: none
(4CD set - limited 750 Edn) We all owe a lot to Leo Feigin, who has tirelessly recovered, reissued and restored an amazing musical archive from the old Soviet Union. What was happening there was quite as remarkable as anything happening in the easy West, but without major labels, press hype and appearances few names have stuck. Here are 4 CDs devoted to members of the Ganelin Trio, all recorded in the 1980's. On the first 2 CD's they work in pairs - this is world class material, as genre free and imaginative and original as anything from the period; these guys were as far off the map and, if anything, freer than many; unhampered by the 'forbidden' vocabularies of melody, style and rhythm and incorporating - very much ahead of the game - multiple languages and crossed genres more associated with Zorn, even Oswald. Note the extraordinary use of electronic keyboards on the Le Mans recording. This box is worth it just for these 2 CDs. CD 3: 'sketches of everyday life' by Chekasin's quartet starts radical but settles into more of a crowd pleaser - a tour de force, but finally giving the jazz public a stomping show. Finally two early '80's shows by the Ganelin trio itself.

  KATZER, G/ Z. KRAUZE, J.KRCEK: Aide Memoire/Folk Music (vinyl)
Code:RR22
Price: £14.10
Quantity in Basket: none
'Aide Memoire'('Seven Nightmares From The Thousand Year Night') is a classic work. Commissioned by GDR Radio on the 30th Anniversary of Hitler's rise to power (to counter the nostalgia coming from West German TV and Radio at the time) it uses the treated voices of the old nazi leaders and other contemporary documentary materials in the construction of a musical and dramatic structure of hair-raising intensity. This is a major work, and unequivocally a political one. It comes with full English text and notes. 'Folk Music' is Breughelian chaos of decentred folk musics, about 100 melodies simultaneously played by autonomously organised sub- groups within the Polish Radio and TV Symphony Orchestra at the Warsaw Autumn 1972. 'Sonaty' is a concrete work based on a phonetic medieval text of nightingale songs. Two voices provide the source material, radically processed. Exquisite, clear and haunting. 16pp Book.

  KILHETS: Kilhets (5CD metal box)
Code:BP0191-2
Price: £43.48
Quantity in Basket: none
This is one of those documents I thought would never see the light of day. I first saw Kilhets in 1979 (it was their 3rd concert) in Prague, back in the days of strict control and secret police, when imagination could be expected to be treated as subversion. A vanishing rarity in the CSSR, Kilhets essentially played free improvised electric music, far from jazz, far from most anything - it was a home-grown laboratory for a new music, something the East-bloc wasn't supposed to have. With hoods and painted faces (whether part of a general alienation effect or a nominal disguise I'm not sure) three (later four) extremely talented musicians (all active more visibly in other bands) just made it up as they went along. On the continuum noise - silence all points were occupied; this was a music that came seemingly fully formed out of nowhere. What makes it doubly fascinating is that these players were not part of a fashion or a school - there was no other music like this in the CSSR, nor was there any ready public for it. Kilhets just played this way because they had to and, at least in the beginning, they also had to invent their own rules and aesthetic. In those days, concerts in the CSSR were few and far between, and each one was a special event. In 2 years Kilhets managed 8 performances, which was pretty good going, and five of them are contained here (1, 5 & 7 are missing). They are all very different and the ones I find most interesting are the first two and the fifth - which is the most conceptual and intense. The others have their moments (some may prefer them - there are even snatches of The Residents' songbook and a lot more quotes from the rock lexicon in them); they are clearly keeping on the move. However, this is not for everyone; you have to be interested or curious and ready to be bemused. That said, this is an important document and a significant piece of lost history that will need from now to be taken into account.

The sound part features predominantly Kiraly's writings for voice - a children's opera from 1963 and various songs and improvisations with Katalin Ladik, some with the Ensemble Acezantez. It's interesting historically and as contemporary vocal work from the 60's and '70's. But the CD gets into high gear with the bonus track - a tablophone solo from 1998 by Kiraly himself, which is astonishing. His instrument is already otherworldly (electrified, highly modified zithers) but his aesthetic is really sharp and on the edge (and the guy is in his eighties now). Think Fred Frith/Keith Rowe and then some. The CDROM is more artistic to look at than informative since it is dramatically lit and low resolution; still it's a good document, and fixes a great piece of music. For this 24+ minutes and the solo audio track the CD is already worth having. Kiraly is one of the few - and a pioneer. And he's still way ahead of people a quarter his age.

Macedonian composer (tutors: Anatol Vieru, Tomislav Zografski, Sir Harrison Birtwistle and the Gyorgiās Ligeti and Kurtag) with a unique voice, moving easily here between tape manipulation, ensemble and choral composition both contemporary and soaked in national folk influences to form a complex minimal, tangled music that answers to no genre but short-circuits straight to the 21st century ear combining the best qualities of melodic and developmental writing with ear-centred composition and a contemporary concern with collage, stasis and unaccustomed juxtaposition.

Some will remember the excellent 7-inch, then the only recording of this interesting group. Now a well made CD. Fast, complex songs with imaginative arrangements and many soul/pop references, but all in a unique (but typically czech) style. Part of a truly original post- 'progressive' Czech school that deserves attention.

The incomparable Sergey, recorded in London, hauls his piano through thickets of sound with deceptive ease. Protean, hopping from one genre to another, scarily free of gloss and bluster, this is direct, sometimes irresponsible music that plays endlessly with form. A long cat and mouse performance with Brubeck's 'Blue Rondo a la Turque' forms the centrepiece; as cavalier with time as the early Dollar Brand.

Mikolas Chadima, Czech troublemaker and survivor, with a collection of great live recordings from 1985, 2002 and 2003. In another world he would have been a major figure; he has the intensity, the discipline, the imagination and the steady depth that makes a great performer and bandleader. His unique brand of rock is quirky, tinged with avant-garde detail and thinking, but remains categorically rock; steady and powerful, never callow or shallow. He's a phenomenon and much under-rated. These pieces sound good, are solid and nuanced, and range quite far, musically. For old fashioned craftsmanship, with an adamantine edge; this is the goods.

A rare collection of contemporary music from Poland for traditional instruments, voices, tape, electronics, computers, samples. Astonishingly varied and lively. For instance the piece for charango, computer and tape. Highly recommended. VERY LIMITED SUPPLY

AT LAST a recording that captures some of what makes Ne Zhdali such a great concert group. To my mind, far better than all but the first studio record. Inventive kind-of rock with brains, exuberance and fast footwork.

  NE ZHDALI: Whatever Happens, Twist
Code:nml0530
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Reissue of the 1995 Rec RecCD. Ne Zhdali came from pre- Glasnost Estonia and found a welcome in the Recommended related community in mainland Europe in the '90s. Fine musicians, with a bit of punky who cares, some jazz echoes and clear rock roots (fast and furious school), they rip through the songbook with noise asides. With careful crafting and precision when needed, strong compositions and a penchant for instrumentals, this record documents a nicely produced, old fashioned, live approach to performance that is very welcome today.

PLASTIC PEOPLE OF THE UNIVERSE with THE AGON ENSEMBLE 2004: Passion Play
Code:KH0001-2
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Performed (once) in 1978 and released on vinyl this was the first of the Plastic People's major through-going works - a major achievement for a rock band by any standards that went largely un-noticed outside Czechoslovakia, and of course, was never officially released inside - the band being effectively illegal. This new version, featuring many of the original group has been expanded and arranged for the PP and the Agon ensemble (a 20 piece contemporary music group best known for their work with the great experimental Czech composers of the last half century). The result is impressive, revealing not only how the PP had evolved a compositional style that left all rock cliché behind but also how seamlessly elements of contemporary music, minimalism and rock can be wound into a powerful vehicle of almost genre-free musical expression. From another planet, certain conceptual parallels might be drawn with Magma (although there is no obvious similarity in the letter or the spirit - and the PP are further from identifiable models than Magma). Still there is certain sense of scale, of evolving composition, of elemental accumulation - and a shared use of choral material). This recording documents the 2004 concert and the sound is excellent. In form, it is an oratorio, with a substantial and impressive text (in Czech), powerfully delivered. The booklet contains the full text in English. Passion Play was one of the great works to come out of what was still loosely called rock in the '70's and has here found a new and expanded life in this nuanced and appropriate elaboration.

  REPORTAZ: Bezsensory nonsensors

Price: £12.93
Quantity in Basket: none
An interesting and unusual record by Reportaz's Andrzej Karpinski (drums, percussion, real-time processing and samples) and Witold Olezak (piano, synthesiser, samples) who between them make full spectrum, exquisite sounding pieces that are somehow both open and structured, rhythmic and free, coherent and capricious. Each piece is minutely articulated, and they move rapidly through ideas. Above all, the sounds are often unfamiliar and rich. Not an earth-shaker but a matured, original collection of pieces.

2 women, one Czech, one Polish who both play cellos and sing. But there's a lot to be got from that seemingly minimal instrumentation and these pieces are remarkably flexible, expressive and persuasive throughout. The medium is openly structured songs - with much use of additive rhythms and stretched techniques. There are some inevitable echoes of Iva Bittova here, of course, given the instrumentation and history of the region, but essentially this is an original and imaginative record.

THE SCIENCE GROUP: Spoors THE SCIENCE GROUP: Spoors
Code:ReRSCIENCE2
Price: £12.50
Quantity in Basket: none
Some changes from Volume One. These are Instrumental pieces, and the band is now a quartet. Stevan Kovacs Tickmayer, Bob Drake and Chris Cutler are joined by guitarist Mike Johnson of Thinking Plague. The music remains somewhere between intense contemporary complexity and rock - passing most points between. Tickmayer's compositional language is....unique and complex and extremely broad - no influence is seemingly outlawed, and this makes for a genuinely unclassifiable form that resembles nothing else I have ever heard.

TICKMAYER, STEVAN: Cold Peace TICKMAYER, STEVAN: Cold Peace
Code:ReRST3
Price: £12.50
Quantity in Basket: none
A suite of fiendishly complex compositions for mixed real and virtual resources. Bob Drake, Djorge Delibasic, Pegja Milosavljevic and Chris Cutler make appearances - playing electric guitar, bass, drums and virtuoso violin between them, but mainly it is Stevan who plays all kinds of keyboards, strings, double bass, zither, samples and software. Three thoroughly through-composed and finely articulated pieces make up this very concentrated suite: Concerto Grosso (for keyboards, string instruments and CPU), The Cold Peace Counterpoints and Five Bagatelles for a Polyhsitor. Those familiar with Tickmayer's earlier recordings, or the Science Group, will have some idea of what to expect - a rare commingling of high European art music (Tickmayer studied with both Gyšrgy Kurtˆg and Louis Andriessen), various East European folk musics, experimental rock, post rock and computer assisted electronic composition. These are intense, emotionally and philosophically driven pieces that demand attention, and reward it when given.

Hungary's wildest. Recorded live at the Knitting Factory and Paradiso. Comes in a substantial book, flat bound, with drawings and texts. Post and Pre punk with musical intelligence, intense expression, screeching, roaring, raw patches and sometimes echoes of Cassiber. Unlike Western groups, Eastern groups still inhabit the semi-colonised fringes of art. This is a good example of a vital eastern life-form.
