AKSAK MABOUL: Onze Danses pour Combattre la Migraine Code:CRAM101 Price:
£14.10
Quantity in Basket: none
| | Reissue of the classic 1970 LP on CD. Mostly written and played by Marc Hollander using a Farfisa organ, clarinets and bassclarinet, middle eastern percussion, mandolin, flute, xylophone, saxes and drum machines (a rare example of their effective and sensible use to be what they are). Full of additive rhythms, iterations and catchy melodic material, this music is at the same time, intelligently minimal, deceptively simple and satisfyingly crammed with detail. Aksak Maboul was one of the seven actual RIO groups, and this LP was why. |

| | Yes, this legendary LP has been reissued at last. A collaboration between Marc Hollander, Catherine Jaunieux, Fred Frith, Chris Cutler, Denis van Hecke ('The Hendrix of the cello'), Frank Wuyts and Michel Berckmans, recorded by Etienne Conod at Sunrise in 1979, it contains great compositions (Marc's epic 'Cinema' and 'A Modern Lesson' are classics, Fred contributed the tightly formed 'Geistige Nacht' featuring his unmistakable Bass playing), some extraordinary studio improvisation, and highly eclectic influences throughout. Includes one bonus track and comes beautifully packed (the famous cover picture seen in colour for the first time). Highly recommended. |

| Fourth in the sound record series of this great festival. This year includes- Heiner Goebbels, Jon Rose, Otomo Yoshihide, N.O.R.M.A., Chris Cutler, Marten Altena, The Rova Saxophone Quartet, Specchio Ensemble, Phil Minton, Lol Coxhill, Steve Beresford, Veryan Westen, Mike Cooper, Pat Thomas. Especially interesting is the radical editing and cutting that runs many different pieces together as one, making new pieces from parts. Another fine work. |

ANGELICA FESTIVAL: Angelica 97 Code:IDA103 Price:

| From the legendary Bolognese festival, another extraordinary compilation which is not merely a collection of pieces but a long logical work in it's own right, assembled with radical editing flair by turntable player (and festival maestro) Massimo Simonini following the spirit of the topic of last year's Angelica- sampling. Featuring 'Ground Zero', Chris Cutler's 'P53', Stock Hausen and Walkman, Bob Ostertag, Ikue Mori, Dianne Labrosse, Martin Tetreault, Tenko, Dagmar Krauze and Marie Goyette, Zygmunt Krauze (with Orchestra del Teatro Communale di Bologna), Mike Patton, Uchihashi Kazuhisa and the Italian Trio Magneto. Plus cameo appearances from John Oswald and Rene Lussier. A tribute to one of the best European festivals (I wish some of the others would mark themselves with such collections). I mean, Buy It. |

BLEGVAD, PETER: Choices Under Pressure Code:RES143CD Price:
£14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
| | A hard one. Peter calls this an acoustic retrospective - it was rushed through to coincide with the official release of his wonderful book. There are two new songs here, the rest are lite revisitations of old material, with John Greaves and Danny Thompson, variously, on basses and Jackko Jakszyk playing guitar, percussion, keyboards and some other things. So, an easy listening Blegvad, with the edge shaved off, though I'm sure a lot of people will like it. Reservations: because I consider Peter to be a great talent, my disappointment is based, I guess unfairly, firstly on comparisons with existing versions of these songs, some of which, like "King Strut", "That'll Be Him Now" and "Daughter", really lose out, and secondly on the general toothlessness of the whole enterprise. I have to ask why? These aren't radical revisions (such as Dylan is a master of) and they aren't solo singer-songwriter versions either. I'm afraid, as the title suggests but doesnÕt excuse, the why? answer seems to be- in order to have some product to market with the book. But thatÕs just me - and I'll bet mine is a minority view. It's just that from Peter I expect much, much more. |

£15.86
Quantity in Basket: none
| | A coherent, integrated work of art. Spoken texts in a world of sounds; concise, complex and for the most part delicately or obliquely set. A model work of experimental radio, but wrapped in a dvd case with a set of dedicated pictures pitched somewhere between a rayogram and '60's bohemian underground graphics alternating with the printed text. Distinguished by a serpentine interconnectedness and a fastidious attention to sonic detail. Different approaches, different voices and different treatments for each tableau keep the ear in the air and the mind off the ground. |

£18.21
Quantity in Basket: none
| (book) A very beautifully produced, 26 x 17 cm format hard backed 160 page, full colour collection of Peter's Independent on Sunday cartoons. This is a universe (or a life) condensed into Peter's own version of a grain of sand. Funny, elusive, radical, endlessly inventive, sometimes scary, always pretty dep (see book for elucidation). It's the same price as a CD but 1000 times more work. A reference book, a philosophical companion, a puzzle, a collection of cartoon strips and some awful puns. You won't regret it.
Weight means we have to add postage to this - sorry £3.00 UK, £4.00 Europe, £6.00 World. |

| The first of two tracks is a long Requiem which for me turned out to be a very serious piece of work - and unrepeatable, captured at a concert in New Mexico. Whatever were we thinking? It's followed by a studio piece, mixing raw binaural sound with sophisticated and radical secondary processing. I use my extended electrified kit and Tom his state of the art sample and real-time processing rig and we try to work as a single, highly complex and sophisticated instrument, with two brains and a mind of its own.

| Golden State Signed Collectors imprint on transparent golden vinyl - last of the 50 copies signed by the band. 180 gsm virgin vinyl and rather beautifully (and horribly expensively, as it turned out) packaged. The music was recorded in California in 1999 with guest Beth Custer (clarinet) on one track. Carefully mastered by Tom Dimuzio in wide frequency, solid footprint, broad compass stereo. Solid and expansive. Though we waved goodbye to vinyl decades ago, we felt this release was made to be an LP - a CD just wouldn't be the same, sonically, visually or ontologically. And of course we took advantage of the exaggerated dimensions and physicality to make it a thing visually to savour. Off the groove, Dimuzio, Cutler, Frith and Custer do what they do and you get a ringside seat - as well as something exquisite to look at and play with while you listen. A thing of beauty. * Outside Europe, please add £3 for postage and packing. Sorry. |

CUTLER, CHRIS: Twice Around the Earth Code:ReRCC2 Price:
£12.50
Quantity in Basket: none
| | An experiment in listening. These compositions are an offshoot of the daily soundscape programme I ran for Resonance FM radio between July 2001-2002, which consisted of commissioned real-time recordings made all around the world between 23.30 and midnight GMT (the time of the broadcast). This CD begins with material from these broadcasts confecting, as it were, two composites of the Earth and a few of its inhabitants, somewhat analogous to what an impossible satellite ear with pinpoint acuity might hear in transit - plus one ear-cleaning stretch between them, taken from a single hear-point. I have tried to make these pieces both open and to work on parallel levels: not only do they have their own narrative and aesthetic qualities, but I hope they also offer a meditation on listening and not listening, interpretation and structure, chance and microphonics. The list of ears around the world who supplied basic material is too long to print here, but it includes many names familiar from these catalogues, and many from the still young soundscape and phonograpic community. Full details of people and places are given in the booklet, along with artwork and thorough notes. You have to trust me on this, it's a really engaging record. Sometimes unbelieveable. I don't think you'll regret giving it a chance. |

| THE LAST 10 copies of a film by Shinji Aoyama that documents a solo concert in Tokyo, with set-up, sound-check and interview material. While we have them. Shinji Aoyama's documentary of an early solo concert in Tokyo, with soundcheck and Interview materials. 65 minutes.
"This is a documentary recording of a solo concert I did in Tokyo in 1998 (first part is set-up and sound-check interpolated with interview extracts) made by award winning director Shinji Aoyama. It captures a moment, and finds your reporter refreshingly (or irritatingly) incoherent (it's no flattering confection); and while the set-up is long, maybe overlong (with interesting extraneous stuff going on) on the other hand, it's really not glamorised or staged - so there is a strangely artless feeling about it (they filmed very discreetly). And the concert is, well - what it is - as improvised concerts are. I may be the worst person to ask, but I do find it pleasingly straightforward, warts and all." |

FRED FRITH & EVELYN GLENNIE: The Sugar Factory Code:TZ7623 Price:
£15.86

| | Fred and Evelyn get together in a big empty space - for a documentary - and improvise, mostly. Evelyn has a vast array of classical and profane percussion instruments and Fred has his guitar and pedals. It's a fascinating collaboration not least in the way it uncovers something of the very different root approaches to improvisation that these two musicians somehow bring successfully together. But, eloquently, it works best on the final track, when Evelyn plays a composed piece for Marimba which Fred, not knowing, simply improvises with, perfectly tonally - improvisation is free, but that doesn't mean it has to be abstract or difficult; the rule should be that there are no rules; and for a good improviser, like an actor, no role should be impossible. The result is a truly glorious piece - sublime would not be too strong (and it would chime happily with a deep root in romanticism). People talk a lot about pure music, but here's a very rare opportunity to hear what such a thing might sound like. |

There are many skeleton crew echoes in the form, though extended forward in time, experience and technology. A lot of great playing and intriguing compositions. |

Odd piece out is the guitar composition, Stick Figures, which moves into the timeless zone, more an event than a composition. It could have been longer, Fred; a great piece, and nicely placed between all those exquisitely articulated strings. Fell, is a truly great composition; it'll wear out the laser on your player unless you're careful. CD comes in a fancy Winter and Winter book sleeve, with notes and paintings. Beautiful, but a bit impractical for sliding the CDs in and out, unfortunately. |

| | Three people play, Myles records and treats their sounds in real time. Some fine stretches. For the most part, it occupies the simultaneous-events/ abstract-unfolding genre of sound compilation increasingly common today - as opposed to what I could call the musically directed type (I have to ask you for a sympathetic understanding of what I mean by this distinction, or we'll be here all night) it's as if Cage had suddenly become a mainstream influence. But as the player's attention to the listener diminishes, more power or more responsibility - falls onto that listener for the communicative act itself. Thus we enter an era where different kinds of listening and different senses of the social relations between players and auditors - are being crystallised out of a vanishing performative practice. Increasingly I find myself drawn back to the musical, or away to the non-human presentation of sounds that are being themselves (environmental recordings, for instance) |

| | Reissue of the 1989 dance music album, with Joey Baron, Tom Cora and George Cartwright. One of Fred's open field type compositions - where parallel events proceed serenely, coinciding half-unpredictably, but still often enough to sound connected. There is continuity in modular repetition but so many overlays, small alterations, emergent details and new material that the sonic terrain they invoke is constantly mutating and constantly unpredictable (even after several auditions). Continuity is here irregularly interrupted by disruptive events, always settling back into semi-stable planes. Re-mastered and repackaged |

FRITH, FRED: Cheap at half the price Code:ReRFRO Price:

Quantity in Basket: none
| | Fred's third LP for Ralph Records, back in 1983, was a collection of four-track home studio songs (and a couple of instrumental pieces) in which Fred played all the instruments (exceptions: two bass cameos from Tina Curran and Bill Laswell, and some great drum samples from Hans Bruinnsson. Causing raised eyebrows at the time (from, as Fred calls them 'progressive music snobs' - of which I guess I was one) for its apparent simplicity and departure from what was then thought of as Fred Style, this work has matured with age and perspective and no longer seems (to this former critic) to stand outside the oeuvre, but rather to exemplify a persistent strand within it. Echoes appear in many later works. In context it's a record that makes sense - what was all the fuss about? - and it has become a record that's refreshing to listen to. And political - political and personal. In fact, as well as being a very rewarding, darkish, toe-tapper of a record, it seems also to have tapped an important biographical moment. There are some great guitar sounds, production ideas and of course the expected exemplary playing of everything, all the time. A good argument for reissues. Very nicely re-mastered, and in a nice new package. |

| | Essentially a pretty great concert by a large 19 strong ensemble with Fred conducting as well as playing. Lots of rhythm, harmony, rock noise, exotic instrumentation, power, complexity and melodic writing, with stretches of chaos, eccentricity and theatre. Totally different, then, from Impur part 1 (ReR FRFC1) which was a deconstructed, spatialised simultaneity of musical events heard through open windows or by wandering through rooms; Impur 2 was an unannounced performance upon which audience members had to stumble (and then collect their friends - or not). The recording here was in fact made a little later, by the same people in a different artspace and has been edited and re-mastered by Fred for this release. It fits well in the aesthetic of earlier group records from Fred: Gravity, Skeleton Crew, Keep the Dog. |

| | In 1996, at the end of a two year residency, Fred organised an event at L'Ecole Nationale de Musique de Villeurbanne in France. He roped in as many of the students as he could, grouped according to their departments (early music, rock, African drumming, classical &c), and set them up in all the rooms in the building. The public wandered around creating their own mix, or sat in the courtyard listening to the sound drifting out through the open windows. For their part, each group of musicians played their own specially written music and occasionally were asked to improvise, all of them following a precise time-score prepared by Fred (55 minutes long). Synchronize watches. The whole thing was recorded on 4 A DAT machines and was later mixed - this was the result: an exiting, lurching and capricious beast with many heads, by turns an orchestra tuning up, a salute to Sonny Blount, a roiling chaotic mass of sound that splitting into layers colliding back together, pullulating, ululating, roaring and sometimes mewing like a kitten. |

FRITH, FRED: Keep The Dog Live (dbl) Code:ReR/FRA03 Price:
£20.00
Quantity in Basket: none
| FredÕs legendary collected works band, formed in 1989 with allstars Rene Lussier, Bob Ostertag, Zeena Parkins, Jean Derome and Charles Hayward. An album mainly of instrumental compositions. CharlesÕ clean, incisive drums lend a sharp edge to the more jazz inflected horns Š sometimes shifting into jazz-rock territory, Zeena in less customary role concentrates on Keyboards (and occasionally sings with Fred), Rene and Fred share Bass and Guitar, Jean covers a family of winds with an even handed virtuosity and, for the rest, if you canÕt square it, itÕs probably Bob Ostertag, whose sampler stored parts, noises and whatever no one else had hands for. As with Henry Cow, Fred integrated large stretches of improvising between and within the piecesÉ following the grail many of us pursue still - integration beyond the point of distinguishing between composition, improvisation, interpretation and performance. This double CD was compiled from performances in many countries in 1991 and it represents both the breadth of composition and the extraordinary quality of musicianship and imagination characteristic of that new, homeless, community of composer/performers that emerged from the 70Õs genre collapse, a terminal collapse that was to throw the contents and techniques of Folk, Jazz, Rock and Contemporary musics into what was to become in the space of a few years effectively a new form

| | Continuing the definitive Fred edition, this is the CD based on Fred's music for the second film he made with Humbert and Penzel - following nomads - that features, along with Fred's compositions and re-workings, a restless and gripping unfolding of atmospheric locations, tuareg and other musics, ethongraphic material and times captured. A collage or a soundwork rather than a straightforwardly musical composition, this is a serious and unfairly marginalised piece (because it falls between worlds?) that nevertheless succeeds brilliantly once the ear is fully opened. A meditation too on the power - and the enigma - of recording. |

Soundtrack work for a film, which is also excellent - be sure to see it if it comes your way - on the work of British outdoor artist Andy Goldsworthy..Exquisitely recorded, crystal clear sounds always seamlessly deployed, mostly played by Fred with some double bass, percussion soprano sax and bass-clarinet added;. It's sparse, but not always, set in soundcapes, even breaking in to melody now and then, but holding at all times in a subtle web of tension that isn't tense; and un-intention that isn't aleatoric. Absolutely great. Fred, you're a bloody genius |

| | A new recording, and instantly a Fred classic. Two, related, small-ensemble works for 6 and 7 musicians respectively - mostly strings of one sort or another, with percussion, flute and clarinet occasionally, and electronics. Fred, violinist Carla Kilsteht and percussionist Willie Wynant play throughout, providing continuity across the pieces as the music constantly unfolds into new textures and dialects. Melody, harmony and rhythm are omnipresent, though not always obviously colluding, and the music moves with constant assurance, never hesitating and never marking time. There are some affinities with Nicola Kodjbashia's luminous 'Solitary Walker' (which it predates) in its use of minimal instrumentation to maximum effect, popular materials, exquisite articulation and a kind of modest transcendence. The necessity and simplicity of these pieces conceals a catalogue of experimental techniques and novel ideas; there are those who'd have squeezed a score of albums from this material. A gem. Buy it. Carla Kilsteht shines throughout. |

Here are clear, melodic, through composed pieces that both hold to the Folk/Rock vocabularies explored on Gravity and continue the exploration of territory opened up on Hopes and FearsÕ ŌMoeris DancingÕ. Another one of those hard to define musical half-way houses, where all manner of disparate elements somehow meet and manage successfully to converge. |

| Between electroacoustic procedural precision and more recent pulse driven electronica slips this placeless new work from composer Lutz Glandien, 2 years in the making, employing material collectively generated by Lutz himself, Chris Cutler and Tuba virtuoso Michael Vogt - heavily reorganised, processed, stretched and re-assembled to make extraordinary pieces that demand - and reward - concentrated listening.

| | At last John, a piano and his songs. Taken from a concert at Star Pines, Tokyo and wisely minimally edited, this follows the dynamic of the concert and lives in the minutiae of its performance. Persuasive and gripping because so real - warts and struggle and all. What comes out is the essence of a performance that is engrained with character and engagement. |

| | First time on CD for the original mix of the album that launched a thousand careers, inspired the establishment of a number of international record companies, and built many reputations. This was the first time together on record for Fred Frith, Tim Hodgkinson, Chris Cutler, John Greaves and Geoff Leigh. An extension and fusion of the key influences of Soft Machine and Frank Zappa, the album is packed full of extraordinary tunes, complex but never pompous arrangements, and great improvisations. It defines a whole new world of European music. Those disappointed by the remixed version which originally appeared on CD will be delighted to hear the album in its original form. Repackaged with contemporary pictures and documentation. Indispensible. |

£47.00
Quantity in Basket: none
|
THE 40th ANNIVERSARY HENRY COW BOX SET 9 CDs and 1 DVD with 2 substantial books - in two solid Boxes. LIMITED EDITION.
Assembled over 15 years, this collection gives for the first time some idea of the breadth and depth of Henry Cow's work. Always very much a live band, performance was their metier, and a concert might range far - always driven by an intense dialogue between tightly knit compositions and radically open improvisation. The officially released LPs tell at best only half this story, and one purpose of this definitive collection is to set the work back into its broader context. These are all previously unreleased recordings, that include many compositions and improvisations new to anyone who only knows the official releases, documentation of a number of one-off projects and events and - where different or remarkable enough to justify inclusion - live versions of parts of the LP repertoire. Many of these recordings are high quality radio transcriptions taken directly from the original masters, others are less hi-fi, but justified we think by their historic and musical quality. And everything has been carefully transferred and re-mastered by Bob Drake to the best audio quality that current technology allows without interference or tampering. It's all a million times better than the terrible bootlegs that are swimming around. Altogether, these 9 CDs embody some extraordinary, and occasionally prescient music. Taking this box together with the officially released albums, it is possible at last to get some impression of the extensive ground Henry Cow covered in it's 10 short years. Finally, there is the DVD: 80 minutes of the 1976 Cow (with Georgina Born and Dagmar Krause) performing many unreleased pieces as well as Living in the Heart of The Beast, Beautiful as the Moon &c. This is the only known video recording in existence - professionally made, multi camera - and has not been recovered since its original broadcast (just scour U-Tube, HC is conspicuous by its total absence). And last but not least, there is a great deal of written, photographic and textual documentation. Since this will probably be the last and definitive collection, it has to be thorough. For reasons of fairness and cost we have decided to split the set into two boxes - which can be bought separately or together. VOL 1 covers the period 1971 to the 1976 Hamburg radio show which documents John Greaves' last concert with the band, as well as the extraordinary Trondheim concert from the quartet tour that immediately followed. VOL 2 takes the story through to 1978 and includes more previously undocumented compositions as well as the Bremen radio recording. The Stockholm CD belongs to this second box, which also contains the DVD.

| We know it's expensive, and that's a problem. But it really is expensive to make, and there's no way around that. However, from feedback we've had we can proposes a special payment method. If you desperately want the box but just can't spend so much at once, you can buy in installments (at £12.5 per CD) and we'll send the boxes with CDs 5 & 10, as well as the extra box for the studio CDs. At any time you can pay the balance and get the rest of the set all at once (when you win the lottery, for instance). Hopefully this will make it a more manageable proposition for some of you. Just add to the cart as many items as you want at any time, and then in the note section at the bottom of the shopping cart (Use this area for alternate selections and additional sale items) specify the title or titles you want. | | Dating from 1974, and following on from the re-release of Legend, this is the second in our series of definitive reissues of the original Virgin Albums. Geoff Leigh had left the group and Lindsay Cooper joined on Bassoon, Oboe, Flute, Soprano Sax. The mix was more 'live' than Legend, with the drums much more up front. The first half is composed material, with some of the Cow's best loved tunes, like Half Asleep Half Awake and Bittern Storm Over Ulm. For the second half the material was all written in the studio, using loops, varispeed tapes and electronics, and superimposing live improvisation and composed passages. Classic, historic and still relevant, this re-issue has been carefully re-mastered with new booklet, photos and documentation. |

| | Another original Woof release from 1983, this was a project led by Dominic Weeks and Cass Davies from the legendary acappella group Furious Pig, with invitees Tim Hodgkinson and Catherine Jauniaux (absorbed into the mix). Marimbas, bells and all manner of tuned and untuned percussion, with voices (mostly in choral/chant style, sometimes treated) With distant echoes of Gamelan, Harry Partch, The Residents' 'Fingerprince' and a lot of Monkey Chant, these are broadly structured pieces that twist and turn and introduce material in A-B-C-D-E-F form over implied ostinati. Sounds like post facto composition: that is, structure that emerges from improvisation and is then built up in the studio. Rather like Cage basing a composition on marks and flaws on sheets of paper, except with selective intentionality - and a lot of attitude. And a BIG, big sound if sometimes a little monochromatic. This was an interesting and unique LP when it was released, and it still sounds strange and unusual now, in spite of everything that as happened in between. |

| | Six substantial compositions: three for the Romanian Hyperion Ensemble, with additional percussionists and wind players (Tim conducts two and plays on the third, which Iancu Dumtrescu conducts); one for bass clarinet and tape (all Tim); one for computer-modified cello and electric guitar (Tim again) and the last for clarinet, bass-clarinet and piano. These are very gestural pieces, which speak to dramaturgical rather than conventionally musical relationships; to the open ear rather than to the decoding mechanisms of a musically literate brain. In this respect there is a meeting of the specifically Romanian idea of spectralism with a more anthropological way of finding a sounding presence; a generating rather than representing way of music-making. |

| | DVD. After their prize-winning movie about Fred, the Cinenomads made 'a cinepoem about nomadic life' with Fred providing an integral sound track, which also won a stack of prizes. [Much of this soundtrack appears on Fred's CD of the same name]. It's a fascinating film and for those who only know the soundtrack adds dense layers of data. Their nomads are not simply Saharan tribes but the 'Cirque O', on it's 2 year tour 'creating a furor everywhere', and poet Robert Lax. It looks at the idea of present time. There are also two bonus shorts, one of Cirque O tightrope performer Johann le Guillerm (18 min) with soundtrack by Chris Cutler and Fred Frith from the Prague and Washington CD, and one a homage to poet Robert Lax. (24 min). 2 hours of intense sight and sound. Origin, Germany. |

JAUNIAUX, CATHERINE: Fluvial Code:AdHoc2 Price:

| | Recorded and released on the Woof label, this LP was a compositional collaboration between Tim Hodgkinson and Catherine Jauniaux. Guests included 2 other ex-Henry Cow members, Lindsay Cooper and Georgie Born, This Heat's Charles Bullen, The Work's Bill Gilonis and Furious Pig's Dominic Weeks. With very varied instrumentation, organised in small groups, these are mostly experimental pieces centred around the voice, which is extended in all dimensions, though largely avoiding conventional melody. That said, there is a tango, a song by Brecht and Dessau and a pair of Blake texts set by Tim that are more straightforward. The Dessau I liked a lot. References vary from contemporary music through ethnic, complexity through trance. The Blake songs are little epics with, to my ear, a faint art bears-without- the-beat flavour; they are also fully formed compositions that prefigure some of Tim's later work. |

| | This is not like an improvised music record, When you hear this you realise how unfree a lot of improvising is, how stuck it is in a language and an approach to the organisation of sound that is actually quite narrow. Having a Tuvan shaman in the band and two serious anthropologists helps of course, and the hardly recognisable instrumentation and the very inspired use of field recordings and sudden mutterings close to your ear. At its best, this CD does suggest a different discursive space, a different 'form of life' ('to imagine a language is to imagine a form of life' Wittgenstein). To me the first 2 tracks really do achieve alien status. More information on package would be nice. |

| | Another legendary release. Fred's first full-on group after Henry Cow - following soon after his move to America - was a power trio with Bill Laswell (bass) and Fred Maher (drums), both from Giorgio Gomelsky's house band Zu - later to become Material. Massacre was loud and their pieces tended to be short, make their point and end. They used the time-honoured structure of bebop: an intricate head followed by high energy explorations of rhythm and timbre (aka noise). But the authority of playing skills remained very much to the fore - hence, perhaps, the term Punk Jazz which was applied at the time. However, this is unequivocally rock. A fully re-mastered reissue of the original Japanese release, plus the five extra tracks that appeared on the long out of print, Rec Dec CD and two, previously unreleased tracks, including The Shadows-Massacre, FBI. |

MCCB: Things from the Past Code:AdHoc1 Price:
£12.50
Quantity in Basket: none
| | Collects together all the releases of all the various, mostly connected, groups fronted by Henry Cow's Geoff Leigh: - Red Balune, The Kontakt Mikrofoon Orkhest and The Black Sheep -, as well as his own legendary solo EP 'Chemical Bank'. Some of this is as wild as it gets (Loek Van Saus' 'Spider in love', originally released in a brown paper bag and now a rare collector's item, stands out). Much is sharp and exquisitely recorded (at the celebrated Sunrise Studio in Switzerland), and all of it is uncompromisingly left-field, engaged, funny (in a grim sort of a way), inventive and faithful to the short pop song format - however stretched. And it gets pretty stretched. Mainly covering a very fruitful three years (1978-1981), with a couple of later tracks, 2 of them previously unreleased. Comes with a useful, Informative booklet with fine photographs and lyrics. A nice package altogether. |

| | Reissue on 2 CDs of both long out of print LPs, re-mastered and repackaged, in a slipcase with an extra illustrated CD of the 7" single that was issued only to subscribers with the original release. Stretched songs and studio work. 'Work' was Lindsay Cooper, Chris Cutler, Dagmar Krause and Zeena Parkins, and followed the vein breached by Art Bears, though with a very different musical emphasis. 'Letters' added Robert Wyatt, Sally Potter, Phil Minton and Bill Gilonis. Music by Lindsay Cooper, words by Chris Cutler. With full text and illustrations. |

NEWS FROM BABEL: Sirens and Silences: Work Resumed on The Tower Code:ReRNFB1 Price:
£12.50
Quantity in Basket: none
| | News from Babel was the song project inaugurated by Chris Cutler with fellow ex Henry Cow composer Lindsay Cooper. The pieces for this first LP were written for a band that also included Zeena Parkins (harp - her first recording with the instrument) and the incomparable Dagmar Krause (another ex-band member) singing. Using the studio as an instrument and experimenting with unusual instrumentation and techniques, these are songs stretched into a less than familiar shape. Phil Minton and Cow bassist Georgie Born also appear. Re-mastered and repackaged with full text and illustrations enclosed. |

| | The Orchestra- Andy Diagram, Keith Moline, Peter Hammil, Chris Cutler, Jack Kidney, David Thomas. Singers and speakers- Robert Kidney, Linda Thompson, David Hild Jackie Leven, Jane Bom-bane, David Thomas. Commentary and voiceover- Bob Holman. In July 1998 David Thomas programmed three days of Disastodrome at London's Southbank. The centrepiece was David's epic journey into the heartland where it's all road and sky and one-horse towns on the outside and failure, deserts and tumbleweed on the inside. There are great stories and texts here, daring to be openly poetic. And songs winding in and out of them. On their way to somewhere and an unusual and courageous experiment with form. Bob's Kidney and Holman are a revelation and it is wonderful to hear Linda Thompson back on the boards. This is more than a record. Sorry about price – Cooking Vinyl! |

PERE UBU: London Texas Code:ReRPU01 Price:
£12.50
Quantity in Basket: none
| | A great live recording of the sadly short-lived version of the band that existed between the arrival of Eric Drew Feldman and the departure of Chris Cutler. By far the best recording of the Scott, Cutler, Maimone rhythm section, I think, and the whole band is on intense concert form: David racked up to 11, Eric working equally on foundations and fine details as to the out-there manner born and Jim Jones somewhere in the stratosphere. Coming back to it, this was a pretty great band. The songs are economical, tightly arranged and take no prisoners. And there's that live energy - the closest we can get to being when and where we weren't. Studio recordings can't do this. Mastered by Bob Drake, and it stings like a bee - with a beret. Play it loud. |

RADAR FAVOURITES: Radar Favourites Code:RR017 Price:
£12.50

| | This legendary band - with Gerry Fitzgerald, Jack Monck, Cathy Williams and Charles Hayward - was put together by Geoff Leigh just after he left Henry Cow in 1973. Geoff and Gerry had been in Mouseproof together (and Gerry next surfaced on the second volume of Frith's Guitar Solos); Jack Monck, then best known from his time in Delivery with Lol Coxhill & Carol Grimes, was also an old Cambridge friend of Henry Cow's [he, Fred and Chris were briefly in a band called Sparks together]; Cathy and Geoff went on to form Red Balune. So, this captures a mightily interesting socio-musical moment. The recordings here are of the first edition of the band, since everything else seems to have been lost - including the famous Virgin demo, which I remember we all loved but Virgin passed on. But, here are two great, mostly instrumental, compositions, strong, filmic and with their own unique musical identity, and a handful of rare live recordings, the last of which is an improvisation, to my ears, quite spookily Cowish. This is a recording very much of its time, eloquent of a musical climate and style that has long vanished, almost without trace. If you were there or are interested in the critical byways of the period, this is pretty essential. Carefully re-mastered from original reel-to-reel tapes, with the originally projected cover by Barney Bubbles. |

| Yes, we're still shopping - this is an unexpurgated copy of the Victoriaville concert (Radio recording) with group: Lauren Newton, Joelle Leandre, Otomo Yoshihide and Chris Cutler. In my opinion the wildest and most dizzying version on record. Unfolding chaos with luminous performances - viz, Lauren's hair-raising interpretations and vocal event, Joelle's oscar-winning bag lady performance, THE CAST for maintaining an atmosphere of knife-edge confusion. All human life and a whole lot of other stuff too. High quality radio recording with nothing cut or edited - nightmarish, and funny. Glad I was there.

| | Shams is Tim Hodgkinson and Ken Hyder, who have worked together for a lot of years and achieved a musical understanding that is both sure-footed and elliptical. This makes for a particular kind of narrative coherence, based, at best, more on synchronicity than accompaniment - and on the maintenance of a tension that seldom descends into the merely musical. Use of the voice is crucial to the Shams dramaturgy - so that you mostly keep hold of the personalities. That's a hard number to pull off. This is a music you are required to play too, by switching off the music critic and narrowing down your time horizon. Some sections are more conventional but where level two kicks in, it's well worth the ride. |

SKELETON CREW: Country of Blinds. Learn to Talk (dbl CD) Code:ReR/FRO8/9 Price:
£20.00
Quantity in Basket: none
| | With 10 extra tracks. A reissue of two timeless classics. On the first CD it's just Fred Frith and Tom Cora, the legendary two man crew who somehow - in real time, not with endless overdubs - managed to play all their own instruments (cello, bass, electric guitar, violin) and sing - as well as, between them, constructing the drum parts - dislocated into elements, with each of them having bits of the kit. This made for some fantastic, and normally unplayable, parts - most drummers having only one brain. No one sounded like Skeleton Crew, ever. Devious, complicated, brutally simple, always unexpected, turning on a dime, this was not just a pop band then, but a tocsin, a call to arms - and a catalogue of invention that is remains breathtaking today. On the second album, the inspired addition of Zeena Parkins (keyboards, accordion, more drums, more vocals) led to some of the best music of the decade. The recording was rawer, more urgent, the songs stand out in sharp relief; every part essential. And yet it's a puzzle almost impossible to unravel: how on earth did they ever evolve those dislocated parts and still make them fit so brilliantly together? Did I mention the texts? So to the point, so good. So where are the Skeleton Crews today when we really need them? Both CDs are here, in full, re-mastered by Fred and with 10 extra tracks - each as good as anything on the official albums. Just give in to the urge: if you have any pennies left, spend them on this. |

SLAPP HAPPY & HENRY COW: Desperate Straights Code:ReRHCSH Price:
£12.50
Quantity in Basket: none
| | (Henry Cow Definitive Reissue series No. 4)In 1974, Henry Cow took a sabbatical while it considered what to do next. SlappHappy meanwhile was planning its second record for Virgin. One night the trio showed up at the quartet's door and proposed that the two groups make the second Slapphappy LP together. So incompatible - Slapphappy was making eccentric pop songs and Henry Cow was composing complex epic instrumentals - so how could a merger fail? Henry Cow jumped at the chance and Desperate Straights -was the result. It's still a gem to my ears, and now at last it's possible to release it, properly re-mastered (by Bob Drake), its sound closer to the original tapes even than our earlier Nimbus vinyl pressing. Great songs, great arrangements, great performances and Dagmar on top of her form... real people in a room together, playing straight to tape. Those were the days.. |

Never reissued, it has slowly become a prized collectors' item - and remains an indispensable snapshot of the range and musical brilliance of this critical moment in the history of a small community of left-field groups struggling towards new musical languages. The breadth of imagination displayed is exemplary and it is amazing how fresh and original this music still sounds, and how much things have changed in only 25 years. What was intended on its release as a practical compendium has now become a definitive document so, on the occasion of Recommended's 30th anniversary, we have decided to reissue it fully re-mastered and with additional accompanying material. |

| Some changes from Volume One. These are Instrumental pieces, and the band is now a quartet. Stevan Kovacs Tickmayer, Bob Drake and Chris Cutler are joined by guitarist Mike Johnson of Thinking Plague. The music remains somewhere between intense contemporary complexity and rock - passing most points between. Tickmayer's compositional language is....unique and complex and extremely broad - no influence is seemingly outlawed, and this makes for a genuinely unclassifiable form that resembles nothing else I have ever heard.

THE WORK: The Work Live in Japan Code:AdHoc13 Price:
£12.50
Quantity in Basket: none
| | In 1982, a one-off version of The Work went to Japan for a series of concerts - in the absence of regulars Rick Wilson and Mick Hobbs, Chris Cutler and L. Voag (as he was then known) filled in alongside regulars Tim Hodgkinson and Bill Gilonis. This recording was made at the last concert in Osaka, and the LP assembled from it came out later the same year, only in Japan, soon to go out of print and to remain so until now. This is a different and extremely in your face version of The Work, made more so by the recording, which brings everything forward and accentuates every punch and roar. Tim is in screaming form and the band take extreme liberties, somehow staying inside the songs they are systematically splitting them open and spitting them out. There's a lot going on here, in rapid succession, and yet somehow it remains uncluttered. Best taken loud (though, technically it sounds loud even when it's quiet), this recording is a nice example of what I like about certain live recordings - they have an energy and directedness (thanks to a lively public) that is quite impossible to capture in a studio. This CD Includes one piece never recorded by the official Euro Work, laconic spoken comments from Amos/Voag and the rare red flexi-disc version of 'I Hate America' by the same band from the same concert. |

Toychestra and Fred Frith: What leave Behind Code:SK28CD Price:

Quantity in Basket: none
| Small edition 'Concert for Electric Guitar and Toy Orchestra, written by Dan Plonsey. Toychestra is a 6 piece goup (all women) who play.... toy instruments. A charming and curious meeting and an opportunity for Fred to play a lot of great, (mostly) tuneful guitar. The problem is that, for their part, the Toychestra's means are very restricted and the use made of them rather predictable and based on repetition. Nice idea with a lot of nice stretches, but a bit plodding and static overall. |

| Bob Drake proposed this project: to make a CD of Guitar Instrumentals, but now, in the C21- and not to copy the Shadows and Surf bands but to recover the form: tune, arrangement, rhythm, bass, drums, all the essentials: flexibility with focus. Songs pushed them aside in the '60s, and then solos replaced tunes for guitar players. Hendrix remembered, Third Stone from the Sun is a guitar instrumental. We also wanted to return to the old work method, rarer today, where the band sits around with instruments, plays the pieces and works out arrangements together and then records them while they are still fresh. That's what we did, so all the basic tracks were played together, straight to tape. Of course, after recording the pieces we - especially Bob - did a lot more work on them in studio world - but playing and spontaneity remain its underpinning. These pieces cover a lot of ground, fast, and move right along; the sounds continually change and performance is firmly back at the centre of the music. What's not to like?

| | Award-winning soundtrack to the film by Horst Gack, (Prix Ultra de Concourse Lumiere, Ulm, 2009: Best Soundtrack). After a break of six years, Chris Cutler, Bob Drake and Lukas Simonis, now with added ingredient Pierre Omer, present the second volume of recordings by the elusive VRIL - a band who revive and update both the great institution of the guitar instrumental and the now sadly neglected practice of collective arrangement, intense rehearsal and live studio performance. Appropriate to the half century that has passed since the birth of the form, these hits dodge about, get bored easily and blend both concentration and complexity with the still indispensable traditional qualities that made the genre great: hummability, crafted sounds, nifty arrangements, ridiculous gimmicks and ensemble playing. 'Neither tribute nor parody, these enigmatic pieces are never more nor less than exactly what they are'.... wrote Lothar Preen in his Melbourne concert review....'but perfectly realised'. With film stills, misleading sleeve-notes and storyboard by the Diogenesian recluse Frank Key. |

WICKES, JOHN: Innovations in British Jazz (vol1 1960-80) Code:JOHNWICKESInnovationsinJazzvol1 Price:
£23.50

| | 248 large format pages with an unusual orientation that follows a line through John Dankworth, Stan Tracey and Humphrey Littleton to Alexis Korner, Ian Carr and Graham Bond, then out into to blues, soul, Soft Machine, Gong, Henry Cow, Lol Coxill, Jon Hiseman, Jack Bruce, Caravan, Egg, Matching Mole, Henry Cow, Paul Buckmaster and many others - all the way down to Brand X on one side, and through Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, Tony Oxley, SME, AMM, LJCO and the hard core experimenters on the other, as well as taking the more expected route through Mike Westbrook, Keith Tippet, Chris Macgregor, John Surman, Harry Becket, Norma Winston and Co. Divided into easy, headed blocks, often biographical (but small print Š there is a LOT of data here), this also covers early race issues, poetry connections, the unfairly forgotten indo-jazz fusions, the UFO club, the Musicians collective, the South Africa connection, Women in Jazz, The Amazing band, Mike Cooper and a lot else. The names listed above are just a tiny selection of a vast number dealt with in this history. There are quibbles one could make, errors and omissions and what I would consider wrong interpretations, but overall the sheer scope and structure of this book is impressive. And unique. I have never seen this story told this way. And the so called progressive and Canterbury groups get put into a serious context and seen as part of a greater story that is about music, its connections and ramifications Š all clearly situated into a socio-historic context. Not the last word but a book immeasurably better than anything near it. Properly Indexed too. A vital resource. Apologies but because of weight, the postage for this outside Europe is 8 pounds (actually 10 but we charge you 8) |

WOOF: 7 Inches Code:AdHoc4 Price:
£12.50

| | This CD collects for the first time all four 7" releases on the Woof label - the rare-as-gold-dust EP 'I do, I do, I don't I don't', by Tim Hodgkinson and Bill Gilonis (who went on to found The Work) and the Work's own three track 'I hate America' - plus 3 bonus tracks, one unreleased. 'I do..' is extremely strange, a little as if the Residents had got mixed up with Throbbing Gristle in a Cronenburg movie, only stranger. The Work are fast and furious, meaty and still very impressive This is big stuff. Next up are the ep and single by The Lowest Note on the Organ (Andy Bole and 'Billy Rebel' with, amongst others, 'Sven Halo', Alig, all the members of The Work, Trefor Goronwy, Chris Grey, Ian Hill, Ted Barrow, Veronique Vincent, and Catherine Jauniaux; a veritable who's who for those who follow this Brit strand). Six tracks that combine rather stretched recording techniques with very open form. Instrumentals, and a song or two with... you just have to listen to it. Then there are 4 bonus Bole/Rebel tracks, more obviously tuneful including a 7 minute medley from Ramshackle Pier, perfectly formed. The finale is Bill Gilonis' 'Naiwabi' from the ReR Quarterly. All in a very attractive 6 panel digipack with 12pp booklet of data, photographs and documentation. Nice work. |
