AN ANTHOLOGY OF NOISE & ELECTRONIC MUSIC 1920-2007 (dbl CD) Vol 5
Code:SR270
Price: £21.74
Quantity in Basket: none
Fifth in this important series which, by mixing early historic electronic music recordings with more contemporary laptop and ensemble pieces, takes an unusually broad view of its topic, leaving it to the listener to make theoretical and aesthetic judgements. The works featured here date mostly from the '60s and '70s, however. Of special interest are Francois-Bernard Mache and Andre Boucourechiliev (1959), Wolf Vostell (1968), Josef Anton Riedel (1963), two rare electronic works by Helmut Lachenmann and Claude Bailiff (1962) and Kagel's Antithese. Mayakovsky and Hausmann represent earlier experiments and Pere Ubu and Ground Zero more recent abstract/noise experiments by bands. Other early works featured are by Richard Maxfield, Charlemagne Palestine, Alireza Masheyekhi (Iran, 1966), Jil Josef Wolman, Leo Kupper, Henri Chopin and a very interesting long piece by Dub Taylor (1972). Later works are by Rogelio Sosa, Christian Galaretta, Dickson Dee and Dajuin Yao (China), Yamaaki Takushi, Sutcliffe Jugend and Club Moral. The aesthetic and technological contrasts evident as the CDs unfold tell their own story, and this volume is a useful addition to an already critical and in some ways definitive collection. This is a resource and not everyone will like every track - though all are informative and many appear here for the first time. Comes with useful notes.

* From the legendary Bolognese festival, another extraordinary compilation which is not merely a collection of pieces but a long logical work in it's own right, assembled with radical editing flair by turntable player (and festival maestro) Massimo Simonini following the spirit of the topic of last year's Angelica- sampling. Featuring 'Ground Zero', Chris Cutler's 'P53', Stock Hausen and Walkman, Bob Ostertag, Ikue Mori, Dianne Labrosse, Martin Tetreault, Tenko, Dagmar Krauze and Marie Goyette, Zygmunt Krauze (with Orchestra del Teatro Communale di Bologna), Mike Patton, Uchihashi Kazuhisa and the Italian Trio Magneto. Plus cameo appearances from John Oswald and Rene Lussier. A tribute to one of the best European festivals (I wish some of the others would mark themselves with such collections). I mean, Buy It.

A 6 CD box containing:

1. The three original releases, properly re-mastered, - when we did them before, the technology was much poorer. Stunningly re-mastered by Bob Drake from 24 bit transcriptions of the original tapes and in newly designed Digipacks, same cover art, of course.

2. Art Bears Revisited -A double CD of re-mixes, re-workings and (mostly) new pieces made from Art Bears multi-track masters by JOHN OSWALD, THE RESIDENTS, CHRISTIAN MARCLAY, FRED FRITH, CHRIS CUTLER, BIOTA, OTOMO YOSHIHIDE/GROUND ZERO, BOB DRAKE JON ROSE, OSSATURA, WARRIC SWINNEY/KALAHARI SURFERS, WHEN, THOMAS DIMUZIO, ANNIE GOSFIELD ROGER KLEIR,ANDREA ROCCA, VITOR RUA, JOCELYN ROBERT,MUSCI/ VENOSTA/ MARIANI, MASSIMO SIMONINI, HERB HEINZ. MARTIN ARCHER, YASUSHI UTSUNOMIYA, JON LEIDECKER/WOBBLY, STEVAN KOVACS TICKMAYER and BRIAN WOODBURY.
6 years in the making, this is an amazing catalogue of imagination and great music.
Digi-packed with a cover art by EM Thomas, who did all three original art bears covers and containing Art re-mixes in the booklet as well as comprehensive information. This double also contains Collapse from the Ralph Records single, All Hail from the Recommended Sampler and one previously unreleased and unfinished track completed by Fred Frith and Chris Cutler for this release.

3. A free extra CD only available with the box (there are reasons) containing further re-workings by John Oswald, Bob Drake, Fred Frith, Biota, Yasushi Utsunomiya, as well as live Art Bears tracks and a Duck and Cover cover.

4. A thick book of artwork, articles, notes, interviews and commentary on the material, the work process, the tour and the band in general, with photographs, documents and artwork.

CMCD [REISSUE]: Six Classics CMCD [REISSUE]: Six Classics
Code:ReRCMCD-RE
Price: £12.50
Quantity in Basket: none
This essential piece of history at last reissued, redesigned and repackaged. Keystone works from the various streams of musique concrete, electronic music, soundscape, electroacoustics and plunderphonics - including two masterworks from Eastern Europe, a territory traditionally overlooked in collections of this medium. It comprises: John Oswald's 'Parade', a complex work drawn and extended from Satie's celebrated ballet composition of 1917; Georg Katzer's monumental 'Aide Memoire' ('7 nightmares from the 1000 year night'), a terrifying document of collage, electronic manipulation, original composition and sound documents from 1933-45; Lutz Glandien's exquisitely economical, sonically powerful and surprising 'Es Lebe' for Tape and Tuba; Steve Moore's groundbreaking 'A Quiet Gathering' (chamber music for environmental sounds) - a multi-layered 22 minute work made only from captured non-musical materials; Jaroslav Kr_ek's miniature electronic gem based on nightingale songs and the proto-plunder legend 'Ommagio a Jerry Lee Lewis' by Richard Trythall. An indispensable collection in my view.

Code:IMED9004CD
Price: £15.28
Quantity in Basket: none
25 Electro-acoustic pieces commissioned around the New Music America festival, from a gallery of North American composers in the field. The constraint was three minutes - to make, as it were, miniatures. The result is a worthwhile and interesting catalogue of techniques, with some pieces that stand out. But it is a sampler, not a 'work'. Comes with a loose leaf 54 page folder and a series of 25 comissioned photographs.

HENRY COW: 40th ANNIVERSARY BOX SET - VOL 1 - 5 CDs , box, book
Code:RERHCBOX1
Price: £47.00
Quantity in Basket: none

THE 40th ANNIVERSARY HENRY COW BOX SET
9 CDs and 1 DVD with 2 substantial books - in two solid Boxes. LIMITED EDITION.

Assembled over 15 years, this collection gives for the first time some idea of the breadth and depth of Henry Cow's work. Always very much a live band, performance was their metier, and a concert might range far - always driven by an intense dialogue between tightly knit compositions and radically open improvisation. The officially released LPs tell at best only half this story, and one purpose of this definitive collection is to set the work back into its broader context. These are all previously unreleased recordings, that include many compositions and improvisations new to anyone who only knows the official releases, documentation of a number of one-off projects and events and - where different or remarkable enough to justify inclusion - live versions of parts of the LP repertoire. Many of these recordings are high quality radio transcriptions taken directly from the original masters, others are less hi-fi, but justified we think by their historic and musical quality. And everything has been carefully transferred and re-mastered by Bob Drake to the best audio quality that current technology allows without interference or tampering. It's all a million times better than the terrible bootlegs that are swimming around. Altogether, these 9 CDs embody some extraordinary, and occasionally prescient music. Taking this box together with the officially released albums, it is possible at last to get some impression of the extensive ground Henry Cow covered in it's 10 short years. Finally, there is the DVD: 80 minutes of the 1976 Cow (with Georgina Born and Dagmar Krause) performing many unreleased pieces as well as Living in the Heart of The Beast, Beautiful as the Moon &c. This is the only known video recording in existence - professionally made, multi camera - and has not been recovered since its original broadcast (just scour U-Tube, HC is conspicuous by its total absence). And last but not least, there is a great deal of written, photographic and textual documentation. Since this will probably be the last and definitive collection, it has to be thorough. For reasons of fairness and cost we have decided to split the set into two boxes - which can be bought separately or together. VOL 1 covers the period 1971 to the 1976 Hamburg radio show which documents John Greaves' last concert with the band, as well as the extraordinary Trondheim concert from the quartet tour that immediately followed. VOL 2 takes the story through to 1978 and includes more previously undocumented compositions as well as the Bremen radio recording. The Stockholm CD belongs to this second box, which also contains the DVD.

  MUSIC FROM STANFORD: Various
Code:innova705
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
A fascinating collection of 8 pieces performed by students and faculty at Stanford University (including Brian Fernyhough and Mark Applebaum) which 'reflect a broad range of aesthetic issues, including fragmentation of structure, complex layering of musical time and narrative vs non-narrative discourse..' The CD delivers what it says on the label - these are all highly evolved, complex - and very different - pieces, each of which has something useful and gripping to say. Especially great are the pieces by Marisol Jiminez (for 3 percussionists - impossible sounds beautifully deployed), and Per Boland (for a small ensemble including the 'electronically prepared piano device': 12 electromagnets deployed above the frame of the piano to amplify string resonances). Contemporary music may be in a mess but at Stanford obviously critical faculties are not dulled and excellence is expected - and selected for. An exemplary collection of unknown composers with real ideas.

NOT NECESSARILY ENGLISH MUSIC: A collection of Experimental Music from Great Britain, 1960 -1977 (db
Code:EMFCD036
Price: £14.69

Compiled by David Toop for the Leonardo Music Journal, this is an invaluable window on a good part of the fringe music that enlivened the UK music community 30 years ago - and comprises archive recordings of documentary importance and variable quality, including performances by AMM, Max Eastley, Intermodulations, Frank Perry, Daphne Oram, Bob Cobbing, Hugh Davies, Lolk Coxhill, John Stevens, Parker/Lytton, Steve Beresford, Cornelius Cardew, Ron Geesin, Gentle Fire, Derek Bailey, Toop/Burwell, Campiello Band, Mike Cooper... of course there are many omissions, and as Toop says, space is limited (although two people have two tracks each, so there's space for a couple more at least); however - and I hope this does not seem arrogant - it does strike me as strange how thoroughly Henry Cow and its members have been airbrushed out of this particular history. This was our period, much of what we did was as experimental as anything else going on at the time - and indeed we organised concerts - and performed with - half the people on this compilation (HC was also part of the LMC, Fred Frith's 'Guitar Solos' was released in 1973 - and two of the people on this set even auditioned to join the group). Look in almost any history however and - nothing. It's strange. That aside, this is still an important, if partial temporal document.

ROSE, JON: Fringe Benefits: an Australian archive 1977-1985 (Double CD)
Code:ESR006
Price: £21.74
Quantity in Basket: none
2 CDs that only Jon could have assembled, featuring as it does 70 tracks of average 2 minutes each, though many are shorter ("Fly trapped in violin" clocks in at 12 secs) and a few longer. As the title indicates this is a snapshot tour of 8 Australian years of chaos, mayhem and profound investigations (extraordinary what was going on down there while we were busy with punk and the new romantics). Featuring a lot of guests, a catalogue of invented instruments (10 string violin, 16 string long neck ditto, wheeling violin, triple neck double piston ditto, various installations, tromba mariner, very long strings, electronics, cheap crap, 10 string double violin, rational viola, ironing board and a number of others) recorded with cattle trains, rivers, rubberneckers, surf, amplified leg, traffic accidents, runway ambiance, parrots, over the telephone and in various clubs, galleries and conservatoria. 2 rare Doc Rosenberg sightings here too - one in church (at the organ) and a band appearance at the Blacktown workers club. Nicely edited together and with an informative book, in which for once you can believe everything that is written. An economical and welcome document.

THE AGENTS OF IMPURITY: A Sonic Arts Network collation
Code:agentsOfImpurity
Price: £17.63
Quantity in Basket: none
Companion to Pataphysics and Fitzgerald, this is a CD in a 28pp 7" square book, compiled by the founding director of the legendary Ubuweb, who says in his introduction that: 'This compilation is a celebration of Impurity and guilty pleasures, as viewed through the lens of the historic avant garde'. The CD contains disparate extreme and cutup pieces, about 2/5 of which I think are startling, noteworthy or breathtakingly eccentric (and have strange, often outsider-art histories: Artuad, Williams, Language removal services, Nakano, and especially the glorious Dokaka and Landers) and all of which feature text and/or the human voice. The booklet includes writing experiments, poetry and drawings. Well worth the candle. While stocks last.

Never reissued, it has slowly become a prized collectors' item - and remains an indispensable snapshot of the range and musical brilliance of this critical moment in the history of a small community of left-field groups struggling towards new musical languages. The breadth of imagination displayed is exemplary and it is amazing how fresh and original this music still sounds, and how much things have changed in only 25 years. What was intended on its release as a practical compendium has now become a definitive document so, on the occasion of Recommended's 30th anniversary, we have decided to reissue it fully re-mastered and with additional accompanying material.

* Simply great. Sun Ra's compositions played by 32 groups - and at frighteningly high standard. Enormous variety of styles but close to the spririt of the master. Also includes some of Ra's short texts spoken. A tribute worthy of it's cause - proceeds from sales go to the Arkestra.   VARIOUS: FRANKFURTER AHNUNG ed Ben Watson
Code:SAN2005
Price: £18.21
Quantity in Basket: none
Another Sonic Arts 7" book + CD, released back to 2005, which programmes a highly eclectic selection of pieces ranging from the sublime to the mystifying. The good parts are really good, and I think there are enough of them. Linked by snatches of audio verité, this CD plays like an intriguing radio programme. To skim through the high and lowlights: Marc Guillermont, Ensemble Rosario, Derek Bailey (speaking and playing), Lol Coxhill, Winifred Atwell and The Kenny Process Team all shine; The Prime Time Sublime Community Orchestra and Lendormin convince; Evil Dick has his moments, while Diary, Out to Lunch and Brendon Burton baffle me (to be kind). The print book - a confection of gruesome poetry, talk-down arrogance and rococo wordheaps - will be a matter of taste, but it seems to me that it fails to show the reader any respect. Still, the CD is reason enough to buy this broad collection.

WILSON, VERANDI, CLIMENT, BARROSO,DJAMBAZOV, BRUMMER: 20 Jahre Inventione VI
Code:EDRZ10016
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
A fine collection of electronic pieces from one of the major European electronic music festivals. All these pieces have some special quality that sets them apart from the generic cliché-ridden quality that much electronic music seems these days to exhibit (perhaps because academicism has so much replaced excitement in their production?). These are finely detailed, fully realised explorations of sound. RZ quality control, always reliable.

  YEARBOOK: Vol 1
Code:BRD008
Price: £14.69
Quantity in Basket: none
Billed as a 'compilation of improvisation' which puts an interesting emphasis on an aspect of music familiar to ReR listeners, but not under this rubric. The concept of improvisation here is broad and these collections are valuable as touchstones / sourcebooks of the range. From interesting to sublime, there's enough here to reward any listener; but above all it's a source. Well known names and, importantly, new ones. Includes- Vol 1, Henry Kaiser, Bil King (excellent), The Splatter Trio, Vol 2, John Zorn, the Molecules, Mike Hovancsek, Keith Rowe, Vol 3, Amy Denio, Ladonna Smith/Davey Williams, Tom Nunn (with a classic), Hans Reichel and Tom Djll. Useful. Excellent sleeve notes.
