Rare reissue of the 1976 LP release from a revived Hearthan Records. 15.60.75 was one of the legendary Ohio groups, back in the glory (Ubu, Devo, Tin Huey, The Waitresses) days. Main characters Robert and Jack Kidney recently re-emerged in David Thomas' Mirror Man project, and in a searing concert at the London Purcell Rooms. It's rock, but it scours and grips. In its field, an insider classic.

Completely uncategoriseable four man ensemble from Mexico with a radically unusual line-up: two tubas, cor anglais, oboe, theremin, real-time processing and collective percussion - who play an intense, rock-informed but far from any rock, thoroughly composed, complex, strange and sometimes scary music that is in a category of one. I saw them by chance earlier this year in Querétaro and waited for this CD. Now here it is. Mexican import, all texts are in Spanish.

CD-R. Third by Sam Callow, a kind of more experimental instrumental R. Stevie Moore, who works on stretches of time building musical structures that aren't really pieces the way a group or a soloist would make pieces. They are melodic, rhythmical (often poly- or additively) and not at all abstract or electronic. Care is taken with sound, not to make it strange, just to make it essential. Wide instrumentation, no winds though. Sketches, but the kind of sketches you keep and which sometimes capture something elusive and haunting. This one: Big sounds, odd rhythms, plunderwork, stretched structures, strangeness. Even some lounge exotica (almost). Start here. Limited No.websitewebsitewebsitewebsitewebsitewebsitewebsitewebsite

Eccentric and original record, with some very interesting pieces, some complex rhythmic material (a little after Mats and Morgan) and a strange eclectic mix of other styles and fragments, featuring voice, piano, guitar, drums, melodica, casio, TV, Tape manipulation, vibraphone, accordion, jews harp, junk and so on. (tiny echoes of Beefheart, Zappa, early Americana, Exotica, 60’s electronics but essentially this is a highly original confection, so comparisons don't help. Composed material. Home-made. CDR. 57 short pieces or extracts covering the first 50 years of the work of the seminal Groupe de Recherches Musicales in Paris, starting with Pierre Schaeffer(1948) and ending with Christian Zanesi (1998), selected and compiled by INA.GRM itself for a special edition of the rather obscure Italian Magazine Avidi Lumi, published by the Teatro Massimo in Palermo. Of special note on the CDs are rarely heard works of Darius Milhaud Earl Brown, and Philippe Arthuys; otherwise it's a lexicon of essential names: Bayle, Ferrari, Henry, Parmegiani, Chion, Reibel, Dufour, Lejune, Schwarz, Malec, Racot, Pamerud, Xenakis, Terrugi, Leroux, Racot, Stockhausen, Ascione, Amy, Lariviere, Philippot, Canton, Smalley, Carso, Favotti, Boucourechliev,, Risset, Mion, Ceasar and Baillif. Very different Individual styles and the evolution of the new musical language over time are here both closely and usefully juxtaposed. The CD's are also sold with a magazine.

I don't know how many of you follow me down this path - not many judging by the sales of other examples, but here is another who writes straightforward but somehow great songs. This came completely out of the blue. The singer, songwriter and sometimes wind player is Steven Brown (Americano), the rest of band are Mexican. The music is steady- near rock, with a latin edge and no machismo, including flugelhorn, trumpet, winds and, when needed, 3 female backup singers. Extremely well arranged and perfectly played. Subject matter, text, delivery exemplary. Atmosphere Lowry-Beneath the Volcano-esque. It's a rare achievement. Nice design too. Mexican import of uncertain supply.

A venture over the edge - it's what we need labels like Mode for. You'd need to be in a certain mood to listen to this but in that mood it might touch something deep. Essentially, this is a conceptual piece that seems to transcend its concept, becoming a phenomenological piece, touching on the ineffable. Supremely pointless; somehow gripping. And if it doesn't work that way, then it's just annoying. The content is easily told: Ablinger plays descending scales on a clean electric guitar, constantly interrupted by chaotic street-noise - which is accompanied by busy, dirty guitar. That's it. No durations are regular, nothing is repeated (although the structure is of endless irregular alternation) and nothing develops or evolves. If it works, why does it work? The sleeve notes and back-story in this case for me undermine a piece that I think needs to be taken on a purely sensational level. Worth attention I think.

Necks pianist double CD of Necks style immediate-time pieces where the structure is all internal and focuses tightly on the progress from moment to moment. A borderline music of contradictions where simplicity arises out of complexity, openness flows from a closed horizon, facility is built on difficulty, where more or less all other distractions (composition, development, evolution) are put aside by repetition, leaving time and a feeling for sound at the centre of the work..

Based in Miami, this is a very interesting American band, ploughing its own furrow - whose accent is what they call 'prog' over there, but whose language is more complex by far. Pip Pyle adds a seasoned sophistication - in fact I think this is a great environment for him, he shines - but the whole ensemble is way past the foothills and keeping the oxygen packs handy. An excellent first CD, in a style that, features densely composed, layered, slightly post 5UU-school music - with some sung parts, high level rock/abstract improvisation. virtuoso playing and excellent clean, powerful production. In fact close and intelligent attention to detail - compositional, performative and sonic - is its hallmark. These are long-considered, sustained pieces. A fine debut.

It's been a few years since Jimmy's last CD, which also came very highly recommended. The new one does not disappoint. This time Jimmy plays most of the instruments (scarily well) himself, with guests on three of the pieces, including amongst them the never less than impressive Morgan Agren). Rooted in the Blues - but blues just as likely in 5s and 7s as 4s - with a strong Beefheartian edge, there is as much virtuoso slide and guitar, quiet complexity, expressive playing and driving rhythm as anyone has a right to expect. This is impressive work.

Slide guitarist Jimmy Agren with a fine collection of Beefheart influenced pieces, wonderfully played. He's also a mean harmonica player, manodolinist, sometime percussionist and singer. Guests include Mats Oberg and Morgan Agren (who's drumming on this record is frighteningly good), and vocalists Freddie Wadling and Magnus Olsson. Beautifully deployed additive rhythms, always moving, with nothing extraneous or unnecessary. This is an impressive, world-class record that rips from start to finish. I can't praise it too much.

Reissue of the classic 1970 LP on CD. Mostly written and played by Marc Hollander using a Farfisa organ, clarinets and bassclarinet, middle eastern percussion, mandolin, flute, xylophone, saxes and drum machines (a rare example of their effective and sensible use to be what they are). Full of additive rhythms, iterations and catchy melodic material, this music is at the same time, intelligently minimal, deceptively simple and satisfyingly crammed with detail. Aksak Maboul was one of the seven actual RIO groups, and this LP was why.

Yes, this legendary LP has been reissued at last. A collaboration between Marc Hollander, Catherine Jaunieux, Fred Frith, Chris Cutler, Denis van Hecke ('The Hendrix of the cello'), Frank Wuyts and Michel Berckmans, recorded by Etienne Conod at Sunrise in 1979, it contains great compositions (Marc's epic 'Cinema' and 'A Modern Lesson' are classics, Fred contributed the tightly formed 'Geistige Nacht' featuring his unmistakable Bass playing), some extraordinary studio improvisation, and highly eclectic influences throughout. Includes one bonus track and comes beautifully packed (the famous cover picture seen in colour for the first time). Highly recommended.

Three old hands out of Soft Machine, Gong and Henry Cow stretch already flexible musical material into one shape after another, then tie it in knots and generally have a fun with it. High quality recordings combined with seat-of-the-pants playing keep the tension high, underpinning a richly labile music, full of shape and colour that is constantly in motion. Compiled from recent concert recordings in Berlin, London and Tel Aviv, this clutch of extended songs should be to the taste of anyone familiar with the protagonists - or who longs to hear a little more straightforward instrumental playing in place of computers, heavy processing and sanitised post production. Brainville offers you tightrope walking, imagination, fast thinking, and a seasoned musicality: a social music, played by old friends, that blithely goes its own way.

The redoubtable Uchihasi Kasuhisa, master drummer Yoshigaki Yasuhiro and bassist Nasuno MIitsurou play up a storm in a form few have the ability - or the chops - to attempt: this is quasi abstract rock improvisation which is constantly listenable and convincing, and never flashy or concerned with technique. They stay focused on the music and the sound. And they think fast. Who else is doing this? Especially when you hear it done this well, it reminds you that music is essentially about the intimacy between players, between an individual musician and his or her instrument, and between performers and the people for whom they perform. |
