DUBUFFET, JEAN: Experiences Musicales Book + CD
Code:dubuffetExperiences
Price: £29.38
Quantity in Basket: none
232pp book in French, lavishly illustrated. Born in 1901 Jean Dubuffet studied painting, gave it up to become a wine merchant. Then in 1943 he became a full time artist, working in various media, including what we would now call installations, in a style often referred to as Art Brut ( now associated with the art of children, the mentally ill, or naifs) - a term coined by Dubuffet himself, though not to describe his own work but that of outsiders who had no stake in the artworld, and who eschewed representation, working from their own individuality rather than fashion or cultural conditioning. In 1960 he began, with a tape recorder, at home, to make improvised music, with all manner of instruments (formal or conventional expertise was not an issue) with Danish painter Asger Jorn. The CD that accompanies this book collects a selection of their improvisations - on various instruments - that are abstract, sometimes rhythmical, always focused and, somehow, visual - like Pollocks or Twombleys they pullulate with a diffuse Brownian motion. They also express a kind of serenity - gentle charm - without ever being less than extremely radical, especially considering when they were made. All the pieces here are dated 1961, with one late work from 1978. The book, 16.5 x 24 cm, 232 pages is in French and lavishly illustrated with photographs, facsimile documents, drawings, paintings, sculptures, stage-sets and photographs (18 in colour), as well as articles and interviews covering all the facets of Dubuffest musical involvements and experiments, including his 'animated painting performance' Coucou Bazar (with original music by Ilhan Mimaroglu). Very nicely produced, well laid out (wide spaced text) and thorough, it also has a complete annotation of the tapes, a discography and a short biography and bibliography.

  DUFRENE, FRANCOIS: Catalogue plus CD
Code:dufreneCatalog
Price: £37.60
Quantity in Basket: none
Price INC. POSTAGE INSIDE EUROPE
A key post-war artist, deeply involved with the New Realism, the Lettrists, the Ultra-lettrists and the still mostly neglected Sound Poets, Dufréne. Like his friends Hain, de la Villeigle and Rotella he is probably most famous for his work with posters torn from walls and manipulated (he worked with the reverse sides). His work (indeed all of the work at this time) with tape recorders, pre-recorded sounds and sound poetry is less known, and every newly released artefact is useful. This CD has a good representative selection. It's hardly poetry in any sense of the word in everyday use; in some pieces classical music pounds while distorted roaring, howls, squeals, overtones and feral noise accompany it, elsewhere Dufréne duets with Chico Hamilton, and with himself, neither of him sounding particularly human. Once or twice he sounds almost normal. Otherwise, this is a substantial catalogue from a comprehensive 2007 retrospective exhibition in Portugal, 250 19 x27 cm. pages, beautifully produced, filled with high quality colour prints of his found and manipulated poster work, drawings, elaborate illustrated writings, paintings and objects, as well as photographs, a discography, a filmography, biography, bibliography, exhibition calendar and list of works. In Portuguese, French and English.

  DUMITRESCU, IANCU : Acousmatic Provoker
Code:IDBOOK164pp
Price: £9.99
Quantity in Basket: none
Interviews with Iancu Dumitrescu and Ana Maria Avram conducted by Gilles Peyret, Serge Leroy, Jerome Noetinger, Tim Hodgkinson and Costin Cazaban. Plus a catalogue of works and full discography. This is serious meditation on the nature of making and receiving music, on the state of music in itself and on procedures and essences. This represents an important crystallisation of the thoughts and practices of two of today's unsung but indubitably important composers (unsung because they tread an unfashionable and deeply radical path - in disregarded Romania - and are therefore deemed 'outsiders to the official Western self declared 'mainstream'. From Phenomenology to Sampling, with a perspective that links deeply to a thread of uniquely Romanian orientation going back 80 years and is yet unquestionably contemporary and directed toward the future. A valuable collection. 164pp

GOTTSTEIN, BJORN: Musik als Ars Scientia. Die Edgar Varèse gastprofessoren des daad an der Tu
Code:gottseinBookCD
Price: £25.85
Quantity in Basket: none
Bilingual (English - German) documentation of the works and research highlights of the first ten "Edgard Varèse" visiting professors at TU Berlin: Travis Pope, Diemer de Vries, Gerhard Eckel, David Behrman, Gottfried Michael Koenig, Hans Tutschku, Trevor Wishart, Alberto de Campo, Daniel Teruggi and Kees Tazelaar. The book deals with the projects undertaken, each dealt with in a technical way with pictures and diagrams and mainly concerned with software design, speaker programming, interactivity, compositional methodology and occasionally aesthetics. Each has a different angle. There is an excellent CD with works by Daniel Teruggi , Hans Tutschku, Kees Tazelaar, Trevor Wishart and GM Koenig - this last particularly interesting, in that it is an orchestral score, played by an orchestra, but generated by a computer programme. It is not a crude systems piece or a random confection but has real subtlety and coherence. This is a rather specialised, but beautifully produced, hardback printed on fine paper, that flies under just about every public radar. It won't be in your local bookshop. But for those really interested in this field, a gem.

HENDERSON, DOUG: Dukatenscheisser. Catalogue & CD

Price: £18.00
Quantity in Basket: none
24 x 18 cm. 40pp glossy full-colour exhibition catalogue from the Galerie Mario Mazzoli, in Berlin. Limited to 300 numbered copies. I had these copies signed by the artist too. There is a short , imaginative, accompanying text (in English and German) by Louise S. Milne, colour photographs of the pieces and their preparation; sketches and schematics. Nicely produced. The excellent 45 minute CD (sound content of the installations) is a fully articulated set of five autonomous and hi-fidelity compositions. You can equally think of this as a fine electroacoustic CD with a very elaborate book. Limited number of signed copies available.

  INACTUELLES: PERCUSSION(S): (3-CDs plus DVD/video and book)
Code:inactuellesPercussion
Price: £52.88
Quantity in Basket: none
A collaboration between Mode and the Parisian art book store Tschann, combining CDs and DVDs of musical performances with an informative textbook. Volume 1 - a Euro-centric and very partial survey of C20 and C21 percussion music, performed by Roland Auzet and featuring 13 complete works (7 world premieres) for percussion solo (Xenakis, Taïra), percussion and voice (Xenakis, Pape), percussion and ensemble (Xenakis, Milhaud, Alsina) and percussion and electronics (Auzet, Bancquart, Campion, Jodlowski, Tanaka). Plus a DVD with Xenakis' Psappha and Rebonds and a 500+ page book in English and French written by musicologist Pierre-Albert CASTENE: Percussion(s): Gesture and Spirit, which discusses the history of percussion music and includes interviews with Auzet about the interpretation and performance of percussion music, especially the works and the composers recorded in this set. Preface by Pierre Boulez, postface by American percussionist Steven SCHICK. The book, though rather clunkily written (or translated) is the prize here, the 90 page essay on the history and use of percussion in 'serious' music in the C20 is extremely thorough, very well annotated and thoroughly documented.

Quantity in Basket: none
An encyclopaedia, with a short historical overview, several more specialised articles, A-Z entries on groups and artists with full discographies, label contacts, publications, venues and website indexe and a couple of maps. 360 pages and pretty comprehensive (of course one can think of missing entries - mainly earlier groups whose vinyl records have not been reissued on CD) but that's nitpicking; essentially, this is the only resource of it's kind and invaluable. Congratulations to Frank Stoffer and his team of 20. Comes with a CD of 18 previously unreleased tracks (inc. Haino Keiji, Acid Mothers Temple, KK Null, Hoppy Kamiyama, Haco, Ex Girl, Ruins, Harpy &c.).

LICHT, ALAN: Sound Art (book + CD)
Code:lichSoundArt
Price: £29.38
Quantity in Basket: none
A high quality 300pp hardback art publication, 16 x 23.5 cm, printed on glossy paper with lots of white space, and lavishly illustrated with (mostly) full colour photographs of artworks and installations. The text is wide-ranging, taking a descriptive and very selective lightening tour through the byways and connections between visual arts, recording arts, radio arts, pop music, avant- gardes of all stripes, alongside sound experiments both within and beyond the discipline of music, to try to construct a narrative about the emergence - and an account of the forms taken by - what is now lumped together under the rubric 'sound art' - meaning for this author, mostly, sound beyond 'music' often with a visual counterpart, whose natural home seems to be event, gallery or installation. As such it's a useful resource, a nice compendium, a name-checked reference, handy for further research; and it ranges wide, though it's focus on the Sound Art field itself is very sketchy. Coming from a quasi-internationalist American perspective, inevitably much is missing and much that is there, if Sound Art really is the topic, is there rather mysteriously. It may be that the book just has the wrong title. Its subtitle: beyond music, between categories sums up the discursive nature of the project better. This book is wholly non-analytical and its connectivities are all sympathetic, speculative and superficial; there are no theoretical insights - or even propositions made; in fact, it's a bit of a ragbag. A perfectly untilitarian ragbag, full of references, information and usefully assembled documentation of diverse - if rather arbitrarily selected - works, nicely presented (though it must be said, the pictures are not adequately captioned; you want to know more about the works depicted, and explanations are not forthcoming). The research and breadth of approach is useful, and there is insider knowledge. Included are 34pp of artist biographies which, depending on your perspective, feature many unaccountable omissions - or strange inclusions - but are, nevertheless both informed and informative about their subjects. If you take it as a personal essay by an alert practitioner, it's impossible to complain, but for a clarification of the field and the questions that vex it, you will have to look elsewhere. A mixed blessing, then. Worth having because it contains much raw data, if partial, scattershot and curiously uncritical. The CD contains pieces by Bill Fontana (Harmonic bridge), Steve Roden, Jean Dubuffet, Destroy All Monsters (?!), Anthony Burr and Charles Curtis (Alvin Lucier) and Bernhard Gal, which are interesting enough in their own right but not terribly informative on the topic of the book, and - like most of the photographs - they remain unaccountably unexplained and uncontextualised.
